21209 06 May 2022 @ 0900 06 May 2022 @ 1300 MAB with Pinto active its hard to see the little spouter first spotted in Sept 2021 except for the gravel rim but as the day warmed up and when Pinto was low tiny blips were visible in the near-Africa spouter
21047 18 Apr 2022 @ 0945 --- MAB the rim of gravels surrounding the little spouter near Africa {first spotted in Sept 2021} was still visible - didn't see any blips with waters from Pinto flowing over that area - I left after Pinto was drained so don't know if it is still active when not drowned
18294 06 Jul 2021 @ 1215 --- MAB less water flowing thru the area now from around the berm & Pinto so Africa is now slightly visible w Colloidal blue water different from the surrounding water color
10719 04 Nov 2018 @ 0908 04 Nov 2018 @ 0957 MAB Visible blips and small burps from Africa - runoff from upstream still flows right over it so I thought that was something. In a blizzard. On the last day.
3305 14 Jul 2016 @ 1032 --- MAB Seen full today - with Pinto seen active today I wonder if when I saw it empty last Saturday that the stars (and geysers) had aligned and both Pinto and Fireball were done and not sending runoff downslope to its crater prior to my visit. Will investigate further!
3275 09 Jul 2016 @ 1850 --- MAB Drained. Water from uphill still empties into it, so I don't think it was from a change in flow uphill but I have never seen that empty! Will check Norris logs to see if they saw anything since I have been there.
1114 11 Jul 2014 @ 0000 11 Jul 2014 @ 2359 MAB I observed a vent at or near the Africa site on July 11, 2014.  This may not be new; runoff from above may have changed making it more noticeable.  Currently Pinto's milky blue water flows into it making it stand out.  Between Pinto eruptions you can see the crater, reddish edges, and sometimes slight convection.  I have sent photos from all angles to TSB and will get Rocco to look at it. For now, it's worth watching. If Africa did indeed clear out its vent, or if it is something new, either way it is intriguing. If it is a geyser, it may have more of a chance or at least be more interesting to observe if or when Pinto stops erupting and flooding the crater.
Edited 8/18/2014: Photos sent to Scott earlier, and Rocco saw it today in person. Both concur this is very near, or the location of Africa.
7637 26 Jun 1986 @ 1800 --- research-mab 6-26-1986 Africa Geyser – Dormant, sinter formation around vent is heavily weathered. Water level in all 3 vents rises & falls in unison between 40-60cm below rim. Serves as drain for Pinto G., Lava Pool Complex,& features in part of the southeast portion of Porcelain Basin. Water in vents opalescent blue. T=125ºF
4659 07 Aug 1981 @ 1800 --- research-mab 8/7/1981 Today I saw no water in Africa’s crater. If it is still filling in concert with Sunday’s majors it certainly isn’t visible from the boardwalk. GS
4629 19 Jun 1981 @ 1630 --- research-mab 6/19/1981 Grover S: Sunday’s majors are not coinciding as tightly with Africa’s fills. The majors start approx. when Africa’s level rises, but don’t end when Africa starts to ebb. They last well after the start of the drain in Africa. Eruptions are gaining power, reaching approx. 30 feet. Water from Sunday is milky. At 1623:15 Africa only filled enough to be barely visible from boardwalk. When Sunday’s major stops, the action now dwindles to a boil for several minutes. Then 3ft play starts which gets to 5-6 ft shortly before going into a major. Africa never did overflow the entire time I observed. Got to roughly 2 inches from top on all but the last at 1626:15
4623 03 Jun 1981 @ 1800 --- research-mab 6/3/1981 Africa – Dormant except for periodic heavy overflow
4606 02 Jun 1981 @ 1800 --- research-mab 6/2/1981: Africa Geyser was dormant all morning, except for periodic overflowing and minor splashing to two feet. It was active yesterday (6/1) with half minute periods of full eruption hitting 60 feet. In the late afternoon Africa reactivated with muddy eruptions to 60 feet coming about every half hour and lasting approximately 30 seconds.
4614 22 Sep 1980 @ 1800 --- research-mab 9/22/1980 Africa Africa Geyser is having much shorter cycles and seems to be in the strong phase a greater percentage of time 179ºF
4603 14 Sep 1980 @ 0000 --- research-mab 9/14/1980 Africa – Heavy water phase eruptions seem to be getting stronger- water peak up to 80 feet. Intervals have increased to 40 minutes
4969 14 Jul 1980 @ 1800 --- research-mab 07/14/1980 Constant was active again today, saw two 7 to 10 second eruptions. Set up a base line of 80 feet from Africa to measure maximum eruption height. For the first heavy period a burst hit 58 feet. During the second heavy period, two bursts reached 62 feet. Africa is going higher than we previously thought.
5082 22 Jun 1980 @ 1800 --- research-mab 06/22/1980 Africa was in a high H20 phase for 8 minutes, and then receded for 13 minutes until the next “high”occurred.
4973 18 Jun 1980 @ 1800 --- research-mab 06/18/1980 Africa erupting at a 30-35 minute interval with 5-7 min eruptions
4974 12 Jun 1980 @ 1230 --- research-mab 06/12/1980 Africa was in its high water phase when Bear Den erupted. Africa had a 10 minute interval between eruptions.
4977 08 Jun 1980 @ 1800 --- research-mab 06/08/1980 Africa Geyser – again cyclic this year, 170ºF during strong water phase
5076 01 Jun 1980 @ 1800 --- research-mab 06/01/1980 Africa appears cyclic again.
5072 04 Oct 1979 @ 1800 --- research-mab 10/04/1979 Africa & Fireball alternating nicely.
5074 27 Sep 1979 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/27/1979 Africa – more periodic, but always has water spouting.
4993 22 Sep 1979 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/22/1979 Africa is slightly more cyclic, but is not quitting altogether as it did before the disturbance.
4999 20 Sep 1979 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/20/1979 Disturbance Africa Geyser – appears to have lost the cyclic behavior observed this summer erupting constantly 15 to 40 feet with moderate overflow.
5000 13 Sep 1979 @ 1800 --- research-mab SEPT 13 1979 Africa extremely cyclic today – steaming periods had no sprays of water
5057 10 Aug 1979 @ 0900 --- research-mab 08/10/1979 Africa was so loud this morning and with the basin full to the brim with fog, Helen and I thought Ledge had to be going. Quote Helen “Ledge started only a few minutes ago!” A mad dash through the thick white vapors left me sprayed by the water coming off of a noisy Africa. Ledge, as normal, was gently steaming.
5050 21 Jul 1979 @ 1800 --- research-mab 07/21/1979 The interval between major water phases of Africa was 34 minutes.
5036 19 Jul 1979 @ 1800 --- research-mab 07/19/1979 Africa was very cyclic today with powerful 40’ plus bursts soaking the entire vicinity followed by periods of steaming without water. Times between heavy surging were approximately 20 minutes.
5034 14 Jul 1979 @ 1030 --- research-mab 07/14/1979 Africa sounds louder and is sending powerful bursts up to 35-40’.
5035 13 Jul 1979 @ 1800 --- research-mab 07/15/1979 Africa is definitely becoming periodic again, about 20 min. between periods of heavy water.
5008 25 May 1979 @ 1800 --- research-mab 05/25/1979 Africa Geyser – definitely cyclical, water phase very impressive much water up to 50’, steam phase still has some water although on occasion dies away to almost nothing 30-60 min per cycle
7659 24 Jan 1979 @ 1800 --- research-mab 1/24/1979 Africa’s ice formation 9’ high reaches with in 16’ of edge of Constant Geyser’s pool, overhanging middle fork of Tantalus Creek T=112F by 15½ ft from its base. 5 other ice cones present.
4953 13 Dec 1978 @ 1800 --- research-mab 12/13/1978 RICK H Africa – behaving as a true geyser with activity similar to Fred’s November 6th entry. Predominant source of water seemed to be major 3-5meter high eruptions out of Fireball Geyser. The ice formation near Africa is approx. 1.2 m tall; other ice, frost, snow & ghost tree displays in the basin are spectacular – especially by moonlight.
5099 06 Nov 1978 @ 1800 --- research-mab 11/06/1978 Biggest surprise was finding Sand Spring in eruption at 1616. Bursts of water were hitting 2 to 3 feet, considerable water was flowing into Pinwheel. Temp 195ºF Africa had long periods where the water was only be [sic] ejected 1 to 2 feet. Porcelain Basin was quiet when I arrived. Africa’s temp 166º ie
5130 09 Sep 1978 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/09/1978 Africa was ie and forceful temp a cool 167ºF
4962 22 Jun 1978 @ 1800 --- research-mab 06/22/1978 Africa seems to be having longer periods of quiet/erupting up to a foot or so for 5-10 seconds. Fireball seems to be decreasing in activity also.
4965 01 Apr 1978 @ 1200 --- research-mab 04/01/1978 Africa in a powerful water phase most of the morn.
4963 26 Mar 1978 @ 1800 --- research-mab 03/26/1978 Africa has been in a water phase these two days, sprays reaching heights of 10’15’
7657 22 Jan 1978 @ 1800 --- research-mab 1/22/1978 Ice formation by Africa ≈ 135cm high, water in drainage below is 28ºC
5121 16 Sep 1977 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/16/1977 Haven’t seen Fiesty [sic] for a couple of days. The activity around Africa has calmed down some and Lava Pool are no longer splashing. Africa is staying more in the water phase and also in the steam phase.
5205 14 Jul 1977 @ 1800 --- research-mab 07/14/1977 Africa seems higher than normal this PM
7574 01 Feb 1977 @ 1800 --- research-mab 2/01/1977 Africa Geyser appears to have more brief pauses of 1-5 seconds. {month is unclear either Feb or Mar – white-out used}
5206 23 Sep 1976 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/23/1976 Africa in a water phase all day. Been erupting at least 40’ high
5208 20 Sep 1976 @ 1315 --- research-mab 09/20/1976 Africa erupted 1:15 in an unusually powerful phase. It was mainly steam, but was propelled up nearly 100’ high.
5260 18 Aug 1976 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/18/1976 Africa heavy water phase all day.
5268 01 Aug 1976 @ 1605 --- research-mab 08/01/1976 Africa switched into a noisy powerful steam phase at 1605
5272 23 Jul 1976 @ 1800 --- research-mab 07/23/1976 Africa appears to be going through steam and water phases every few minutes.
5529 05 Jun 1976 @ 1800 --- research-mab 06/05/1976 The last few days Africa goes into spells when it puts out mostly steam with very little water.
5682 02 Sep 1975 @ 1025 --- research-mab 09/02/1975 Africa Geyser – intense steam phase 1025
5693 31 Aug 1975 @ 1200 31 Aug 1975 @ 1230 research-mab 08/31/1975 Africa: appears quite vigorous today. Noted that it was in a steam-phase 12:00- 12:30pm
5654 24 Aug 1975 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/24/1975 Africa seems to be favoring the steam phase.
5636 18 Aug 1975 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/18/1975 Africa – very beautiful fountain phase – quite intense- height 35-40’ {no time entry}
5629 26 Jul 1975 @ 1545 26 Jul 1975 @ 1600 research-mab 07/26/1975 Africa went in and out of steam phase between 3:45 and 4:00. The feature has been predominately in a water phase last week, (Saturday- Wednesday observations) and continuing into this week.
5620 22 Jul 1975 @ 0900 22 Jul 1975 @ 1230 research-mab 07/22/1975 Africa seemed sluggish and listless at 9:00 AM 07/22/1975 Africa – in and out of steam phase between 12:10 and 12:30
5604 06 Jul 1975 @ 0800 --- research-mab 07/06/1975 Africa in intense water phase. This is first water phase I have noted since earthquake last Monday. Water phase noted 0800
5589 25 May 1975 @ 1800 --- research-mab 05/25/1975 Africa although erupting forcefully and constantly, has two different phases. During one it is for all intents and purposes a fumerole. At other times there is considerable water thrown out. The cycle from steam to water to steam takes several hours.
5587 24 May 1975 @ 1800 --- research-mab 05/24/1975 Africa has lost most of its water and is now pretty much a forceful fumerole. Saw Ragged Spouter and Feisty going at same time. … Icebergs melting fast.
5584 18 May 1975 @ 1800 --- research-mab 05/18/1975 Have failed to note the icebergs found in the middle of Porcelain Basin between the Whirligigs and Africa. Two large (the largest about 10 x 20’ and 15’ tall) chunks of dirty ice and compacted snow. Why did they form? Is it because of the change in activity of the Whirligigs?
5586 18 May 1975 @ 0900 --- research-mab 05/18/1975 Africa – in continuous eruption much water and steam to 45’. Noise can be easily heard at the museum parking area.

6194 28 Sep 1973 @ 1500 --- research-mab 09/28/1973 Porcelain Basin 3:00 Africa almost shuts down completely between high water phases.
6184 26 Sep 1973 @ 1500 --- research-mab 09/26/1973 Porcelain 3pm Africa alternating high – 30’ - low 2-5’ water ejections
6175 21 Sep 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/21/1973 Africa – shows much decreased steam pressure both during the heavy water phase and the interim between heavy water phases; there is no more terrific roar; today, at 2:00 PM, Africa ended the high (~30’) watery eruption and dropped to a very low height, water lifted only 2 ft or so above the rim of the vent for ~ ½ min. then followed by fluctuating low water heights (3-10’), this present performance appears much in the style as it showed prior to Aug. 9.
6113 06 Sep 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/06/1973 Africa with almost normal amounts of water. {no specific times}
6099 05 Sep 1973 @ 1845 --- research-mab 09/05/1973 P.B. at 6:45 Africa w/much water in its eruption (normal amount)
6111 04 Sep 1973 @ 1215 04 Sep 1973 @ 1700 research-mab 09/04/1973 Africa began losing its water ~~ 12:15 by 12:45 it was very loud & more like a steam vent. Regained water ~~ 5:00
6092 30 Aug 1973 @ 1030 --- research-mab 08/30/1973 Africa has water & the sound is much diminished – H20 began to disappear around 10:30 – noise increased.
6081 22 Aug 1973 @ 2010 --- research-mab 08/22/1973 Africa with (still_) more watery type eruptions at 8:10 pm.
6079 22 Aug 1973 @ 1710 --- research-mab 08/22/1973 Africa gained some H20 at 5:10 – noise diminished some as a result.
6077 22 Aug 1973 @ 1030 22 Aug 1973 @ 1200 research-mab 08/22/1973 Africa had increased water between 10:30 am and noon with fanning at top; before & after, it looked more like a steam vent.
6072 21 Aug 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/21/1973 Africa is still so noisy that people in the C.G. are reporting hearing it during the night.
6054 15 Aug 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/15/1973 Today and yesterday, Africa has shown some decrease in its recent forceful activity; at times it now seems to recede a bit and the “roar” is somewhat diminished.
6052 11 Aug 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/11/1973 {generic time} Also Steamboat and Africa very active
6050 10 Aug 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/10/1973 Africa continuing its powerful eruptive phase, possibly due to tremors last few days?
6048 09 Aug 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/09/1973 Africa has been in a strong eruption cycle all day – the noise it has been making makes it difficult to talk over it.
6038 15 Jul 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 07/15/1973 Grey particles of clay (?) have been deposited in the runoff waters (channels) of Little Whirligig and Africa (and in the red basin of L. Whirligig)
6031 08 Jul 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 07/08/1973- high water from both L Whirligig & Africa {no times}
6024 24 Jun 1973 @ 1750 --- research-mab 06/24/1973 Africa: before a 5 ½ min eruption of normal height & overflow, the “quiet period” without overflow was noticed at 5:50 pm to be unusually quiet & low & water was visible in the basin but only barely splashed out infrequently.
5973 24 Apr 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 04/24/1973 Africa maximum height of one measured tall burst (with the Brunton pocket transit) was an even 50 feet. {no time}
5936 25 Mar 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 03/25/1973 Africa Geyser – one eruption timed at 4m30s {no time noted}
5937 19 Mar 1973 @ 1633 --- research-mab 03/19/1973 During this time {Ledge} Fireball Geyser was completely drained and inactive followed by Africa “beginning” an eruption at 4:33.
5908 09 Mar 1973 @ 1411 09 Mar 1973 @ 1500 research-mab 03/09/1973 Africa – has almost continuously activity unlike the usual pattern the previous two summers. It appears to have water phase (with runoff), and a steam phase (no runoff)but still a lot of water shot out of the vent). However, as of yet there has been no quiet or inactive phase seen. Three consecutive water phases were observed:
6486 11 Sep 1972 @ 1200 --- research-mab 09/11/1972 Bear Den, Dark Cavern, Africa. L. Whirligig, Blue, Fireball & Arsenic all have been observed in eruption this morning. {generic a.m. time}
6430 19 Aug 1972 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/19/1972 Little Whirligig, arsenic, & Africa are still playing continuously. Ledge still has intermittent spray type minor play.
No attachments for this geyser.
