Seen full today - with Pinto seen active today I wonder if when I saw it empty last Saturday that the stars (and geysers) had aligned and both Pinto and Fireball were done and not sending runoff downslope to its crater prior to my visit. Will investigate further! |

I observed a vent at or near the Africa site on July 11, 2014. This may not be new; runoff from above may have changed making it more noticeable. Currently Pinto's milky blue water flows into it making it stand out. Between Pinto eruptions you can see the crater, reddish edges, and sometimes slight convection. I have sent photos from all angles to TSB and will get Rocco to look at it. For now, it's worth watching. If Africa did indeed clear out its vent, or if it is something new, either way it is intriguing. If it is a geyser, it may have more of a chance or at least be more interesting to observe if or when Pinto stops erupting and flooding the crater.
Edited 8/18/2014: Photos sent to Scott earlier, and Rocco saw it today in person. Both concur this is very near, or the location of Africa. |

6/19/1981 Grover S: Sunday’s majors are not coinciding as tightly with Africa’s fills. The majors start approx. when Africa’s level rises, but don’t end when Africa starts to ebb. They last well after the start of the drain in Africa. Eruptions are gaining power, reaching approx. 30 feet. Water from Sunday is milky. At 1623:15 Africa only filled enough to be barely visible from boardwalk. When Sunday’s major stops, the action now dwindles to a boil for several minutes. Then 3ft play starts which gets to 5-6 ft shortly before going into a major. Africa never did overflow the entire time I observed. Got to roughly 2 inches from top on all but the last at 1626:15 |

Africa – shows much decreased steam pressure both during the heavy water phase and the interim between heavy water phases; there is no more terrific roar; today, at 2:00 PM, Africa ended the high (~30’) watery eruption and dropped to a very low height, water lifted only 2 ft or so above the rim of the vent for ~ ½ min. then followed by fluctuating low water heights (3-10’), this present performance appears much in the style as it showed prior to Aug. 9. |
