17275 30 May 2021 @ 1618 --- cb still very active
16892 20 Apr 2021 @ 1544 20 Apr 2021 @ 1603 MAB Orby 1544-1600 Water level is low - the first sign of an eruption is the rumbling noise coming from the crater! Some pauses restart and after 30 sec duration the crater is flooded, otherwise it's low in volume and height. There were some quick turnarounds that others might have combined into the 1st eruption. It takes concentration! I will enter what I have, some may be combined into 1 entry if GT thinks they are too close together. Interesting.
16399 10 Oct 2020 @ 1032 --- cb Orby is still going gang busters. erupting every minute or so. The Cousin or Wineticicly is steaming and gurgling deep inside the crater but no water visible
14896 06 Jul 2020 @ 0955 06 Jul 2020 @ 1130 cb Orby starts from a empty crater. It spashes up to 2' with a thick, wide, puffball appearance and fills as the eruption progresses. All the eruptions I saw, the pool stayed within its crater and did not overflow. It erupts for a few minutes and then abruptly stops and the pool drains completely. The water is a muddy light brown color. (think chocolate milk) * * *The Cousins feature that is to the west of Orby> The main, center vent that in June had a pool that was high and perpetually erupting is now erupting deep down in the vent. The only water I could see today was the tips of the splashes that barely reached the height of the platform. The platform is dry. This was observed from the boardwalk above Orby and just beyond Yellow Funnel Spring
14691 20 Jun 2020 @ 1114 20 Jun 2020 @ 1244 cb tried to start at the 1116 mark but pool dropped. it continued to bubble but no actual eruption. Pool stayed at low level (4" from overflow) while it just bubbled barely breaking the surface. 1125 pool started to fill again. 1127 dropped with very weak bubbles. 1128 no bubbles in the pool, pool quiet. 1134 pool filling. 1136 dropped. 1141 filling. 1144 dropped. from 1144 - 1245 the pool would do a filling/drop cycle with a bubbling that occationally would bloop but not erupt.
14003 03 Nov 2019 @ 1114 --- MAB clear calm - overflow connects w feature to west or it connects to Orby- not sure which. All cousins and other nearby holes are quiet
13929 12 Oct 2019 @ 1245 --- cb Orby is calm, not even putting out pulsing waves. The main vent of The Cousins is erupting to 8" but the side vent (or other cousin) is quiet. The spouter between the Cousins and Orby was not erupting.
13573 05 Sep 2019 @ 0939 --- cb everthing on the platform is quiet except for the feature between Orby and the Cousins. It is erupting 6 - 8" high perpetually.
13489 01 Sep 2019 @ 0857 --- cb all vents within this platform are quiet. no activity.
13423 27 Aug 2019 @ 1016 --- MAB flat water in the grayish crater
13315 18 Aug 2019 @ 1514 --- cb nothing in this area is active today. no bubbles, no convection, nada
13251 14 Aug 2019 @ 1602 --- cb some pulsing action that is sending good sized convection waves out. water is clearThe Cousins activity has diminished exponentially. Only brief blips from both pools that are just barely breaking the surface
13161 11 Aug 2019 @ 0842 --- RMichaels Orby is full and calm. Features in large pool immediately Northwest of Orby are erupting clear water up to six inches.
13127 09 Aug 2019 @ 0857 --- cb Orby calm and still. Cousins active.
12998 03 Aug 2019 @ 0849 --- cb calm and flat. The Cousins are perpetual spouters and the feature between Orby and The Cousins is erupting from 2 vents continuously.
12972 02 Aug 2019 @ 0949 --- MAB flat w tiny bubbles. the cousin behind was Ie all day with clear water
12924 01 Aug 2019 @ 1113 --- cb i havent been sure where to post this info.Orby is not erupting but the Cousins, or Xiuhtecuhtli, (whee-uh-tek-oo-t'lee) has been in constant play since the 30th. Both vents.
12107 04 Jul 2019 @ 1100 --- ldgordon Small splashing about a couple inches high for prolonged time
11614 07 Jun 2019 @ 0904 --- CrisG clear and calm pool.
11121 01 May 2019 @ 1126 --- cb no activity seen from Orby or its cousin in the few days/times we've been in the park.
11059 23 Apr 2019 @ 1104 --- MAB Orby is a flat pool with a little convection. Two small spots east of Orby spitting above ground level. - - Cousin next door active with cloudy water -much cleaner. Smaller little cousin within the pool also spouting.
11025 20 Apr 2019 @ 1335 20 Apr 2019 @ 1435 MAB Dark muddy eruptions. Hard to time them with 'Disturby' next door stealing the show. It appears that Orby would alternate short (30 sec) then long (60 sec) eruptions. The eruptions from the vent to the NW appear to grow in size when Orby is erupting. At times it has an overflowing pool, other times it shows the edges of the crater. In size it looks like a Whirligig eruption, in dark brown. Tom C thought the NW vent had enlarged since yesterday.
19297 19 Apr 2019 @ 0925 --- research-mab 19 Apr 2019 @ 0925 RMICHAELS ORBY See Note under Steamboat Boardwalk to Steamboat is open. Steamboat very quiet. Only occasional splashing from either vent. South Vent runoff channel completely dry. Cistern in light overflow with one boil in center. Suspect there may be ongoing disturbance affecting at least the back basin because two features near Orby were having muddy eruptions. Porkchop also had no water in it. I didn't do a full tour of the back basin but it appeared from a casual glance that many typically quiet features were erupting or had more water than usual. I spaced out looking at Emerald to see if it was cloudy/boiling. I believe others made more detailed observations. https://geysertimes.org/note.php?id=10995
8850 22 Jun 2018 @ 1039 --- MAB More Frequent. Fill & Preplay down in the vent start just after the identical size eruptions near the end, with little pause. Didn't see activity in that other fissure in the crater. 'The Cousins' nearby were IE
3986 21 Apr 2017 @ 1500 21 Apr 2017 @ 1547 MAB Hard to say what's going on here- eruptions were in multiples of 30 seconds. With more observations I/we may decide that the pauses and quick restarts are all part of the same eruption, which would then total about 90 second total duration.
3105 20 Jun 2016 @ 1800 20 Jun 2016 @ 1845 MAB From the overlook above Orby, growls and grumbles coming from Son of Green Dragon (possibly), another UNNG (possibly) but also from Orby after it drains and before it restarts. Great sounds
2829 09 May 2016 @ 1200 09 May 2016 @ 1831 MAB Orby seen erupting _and_ draining again, as seen from Vixen and a walkabout to Yellow Funnel. I have some times but they are sporadic due to attention. I will work on watching it more closely next visit.
2811 02 May 2016 @ 1700 --- MAB still full with 2" splashing
2735 15 Apr 2016 @ 1528 15 Apr 2016 @ 1804 MAB Orby is full. No eruptions noted from 1530 to when I left about 1800
4728 03 Jul 2000 @ 1800 --- research-mab 7/03/2000 Orby is active, water in Rubble
20452 02 Jun 1999 @ 1200 --- research-mab 6/2/99 We are experiencing a “localized disturbance” in the Back Basin. Look at Son of Green Dragon, “Orby” Geyser, Yellow Funnel and Blue Mud Steam Vent. They are all exhibiting “disturbance” type of activity. [generic day time]
4970 29 Jun 1980 @ 1800 --- research-mab 06/29/1980 Orby – quite active
5138 09 Jun 1980 @ 1800 --- research-mab 06/09/1980 Orby Geyser – nice eruptions to three feet, temp between eruptions 174ºF
5067 28 Sep 1979 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/28/1979 Orby Geyser quite periodic today starting an eruption every few minutes. 198ºF ie
4959 05 Jul 1978 @ 0800 05 Jul 1978 @ 1800 research-mab 07/05/1978 Butch – Every 10 min
5216 16 Sep 1976 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/16/1976 Butch’s Geyser – still erupting & imitating Vixen
5320 14 Sep 1976 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/14/1976 Butch Geyser – still behaving like Vixen.
5234 10 Sep 1976 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/10/1976 Butch Geyser – behaving very much like Vixen- fills, eruptions last about a minute, then drains
5238 08 Sep 1976 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/08/1976 Butch’s Geyser really acting like a geyser. The pool drains, then starts filling and splashing, most bursts about 1’ although some approached 2’, when the pool is full activity stops and it drains with a whirlpool. Entire cycle takes about 1¾-2 minutes.
5689 06 Sep 1975 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/06/1975 Butch’s Geyser erupting this pm {no times noted}
5695 03 Sep 1975 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/03/1975 Butch’s Geyser, down 4-5” splashing 1-2’ high. {no times noted}
5659 28 Aug 1975 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/28/1975 Pool of water north of Son of Green Dragon – Butch Geyser (?) - is bubbling, with large bubbles rising to surface & splashing water over edges of pool.
5832 20 Sep 1974 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/20/1974 Hodie’s Hole & Butch – still active but appear to be slowing down a bit. Another new spring – 2’W of Butch: ~6 in diameter, spouting to 9”
5772 23 Aug 1974 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/23/1974 Butch’s (Orby) completely periodic w/complete draining; eruptions to ~3’; interval & duration ~ 2minutes. Temp ie 200ºF {no times}
5753 15 Aug 1974 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/15/1974 Butch’s Geyser now is comprised of a pool ~8’ in diameter, instead of the old uncovered spouter. Now erupts through the pool.
6191 30 Sep 1973 @ 1000 --- research-mab 09/30/1973 BAck Basin 10:00 am Butch geyser no longer giving of[f] very much water at all it erupts only to about 2’ from the full pool – the entire area contains H20 in many small depression w/overflow
6181 29 Sep 1973 @ 1100 --- research-mab 09/29/1973 1100 The water in Butch G. is clear the feature now has two vents w/bubbling from both and several small frying pans appear around its perimeter. Water levels high also in nearby depressions
6168 20 Sep 1973 @ 0930 --- research-mab 09/20/1973 Back Basin at 9:30 am ~ not seen erupting this morning instead its basin was full of water which was bubbling slightly.
6164 19 Sep 1973 @ 1000 --- research-mab 09/19/1973 Back Basin 10:00 am Butch Geyser same activity as recently noticed: 30-50s eruption followed by similar periods of dormancy
6159 18 Sep 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/18/1973 Butch Geyser similar activity to yesterday noted: 45s eruption 40s drainage, 40s eruption 35s drainage
6151 17 Sep 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/17/1973 “Butch Geyser” seen erupting once for 20s, then again for about 45s with ~45s draining time between eruptions. {no times}
6150 16 Sep 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/16/1973 “Butch Geyser” seems to be shortening eruption duration, though not the style of eruption. Two intervals recorded today, 45s, 1m05s (does he mean duration mab} {no times noted}
6101 10 Sep 1973 @ 0900 --- research-mab 09/10/1973 Back Basin at 9:00: {no specific times} observed for two eruptions 1m08s, 1m09s durations, but more violent than earlier observed.
6118 07 Sep 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/07/1973 {no specific times} Small fountain geyser north of “Son of...” observed for three eruptions this afternoon durations: 2m25s, 2m25s, 2m26s water drained back into the feature (no runoff) and it started to erupt...before all the water drained back into it. It plays muddy water 2-3’
6108 03 Sep 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/03/1973 Small muddy spring at the foot of “Son of...” seems to have fountain-like geyser activity. Has been seen in eruptions before, and has been increasing in activity in recent weeks, but this is the first time this type of activity has been observed. {no specific time}
6200 03 Sep 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 10/03/1973 Butch G. more water in the immediate area now exhibiting splashing only to 8” followed by a calm state. Both states lasting about 30sec. {no time}
20565 02 Oct 1971 @ 1800 --- research-mab 10/02/1971 A small geyser spouter has become active about 90’ NW of the feature north of Yellow Funnel which is marked as “vigorous boiler” on the USGS Norris Thermal Map - has periodic play every 45-90 seconds, shooting water up 6-12 inches & a few times 13 or 14 inches. [Note 'vigorous boiler' on 1966 USGS is Son of Green Dragon - generic end of day time]
