30 May 2021 @ 0925 BEN VL ECHINUS See Note under Steamboat
Emerald cloudy this morning (low wind) but cleared up quite a bit by the time I left. It seems like it has been alternating btwn clear and cloudy each day for a while. Echinus has also been alternating clear and murky each day. It seems that whenever ES is clear, Echinus has been that cloudy filthy brown color from last year, and visa versa. The one note where I saw something sort of interesting from a few days ago, ES was clear and Echinus was murky.

Very, very low temperature fluctuations the past few days. During the regular, 12½-day cycle, large fluctuations (±10°C from average) would have been occurring by now, yet the fuctuations have only become smaller and smaller barring about 2 hours just after noon December 22. I don't think this is temperature-related - large fluctuations have happened regardless of temperature. Rather, it could be the temperature sensor got dislodged with the second eruption this year or a change in activity. The latter appears to be more likely as Echinus had small fluctuations recorded between September and October 2019; furthermore, the event after #2 this year did not result in a long "valley", while the second event did even though its maximum temperature was lower than that of the first event. See Echinus' notes on December 17 for those spikes. |

Another spike today (#2 post-eruptions). This one started @ 2322:46, when temperature rose 1.5°C to 34.0°C. Peak of 45.2°C was reached @ 2328:46, followed by a drop which reached its minimum @ 0206:46 at 10.5°C. Along with the remarkably long drop following the spike, recovery (time between drop minimum and first ≥30.0°C data point) to average temperature took longer than usual, taking until 0348:46 before the first ≥30.0°C temperature was recorded. The past months recovery from similar spikes (except for the first one in October) took only minutes, yet this one needed the better part of 2 hours to do so. Also noteworthy is that this is the first spike this "active phase" (≤October 2020 - onw.) to occur in a period _after_ spikes (in this case, eruptions) are expected to occur, where Echinus tends to have less-than-usual temperature fluctuations - i.e. the temperature hangs around its average of ±30°C for several days - before it widens up again for the next round of spikes. |

After two eruptions (2020-12-16 2149:08 E and 2020-12-17 0709:08 E), Echinus spiked again, this time only to up to 53.0°C. Spike started @ 1013:08 when temperature rose to 45.5°C, sustained above 50°C for three data points (6 minutes, 50.7°C, 53.0°C and 52.6°C, respectively), after which the temperature dropped quickly to below 30°C (1031:08 first datapoint) and then slowly to its minimum of 11.6°C @ 1213:08. Recovery appeared to be slow, with it still not having reached a stable average 26 minutes later, at which point the data ends. [Update] Temperature reached stability @ 1256:46. Another "mini spike" occurred @ 1300:46, when temperature rose to 31.4°C and reached its peak @ 1316:46 (34.2°C). Drop was, consequently, small, only to 28.5°C and had recovered two data points later (4 minutes). |

At Echinus it doesn’t look like it erupted. The Cyanobacteria in the runoff channels looks intact and the grass on the edge of the pool is not knocked down. The water is mostly clear with only light opalescence. I wonder what it did? It is boiling strongly from the South vent, less so from the North vent. |

The first started @ 0418:08 and only peaked @ 0426:08 (45.1°C) after staying at above average temperatures (±34.8°C in the hour preceding) those 8 minutes. Dropped in 3 data points to 26.4°C @ 0430:08. Second spike started @ 0432:08 (28.7°C) and reached peak @ 0444:08 (48.7°C). Drop in 4 data points to 17.6°C @ 0452:08. Third and final spike started @ 0454:08, with temperature rising immediately to 35.7°C and reaching peak @ 0458:08 (49.6°C). Drop in 4 data points to 18.4°C @ 0506:08. Temperature fluctuations before these set of spikes were abnormally high the previous 3¼ days (8½ days if the intermezzo of about 24 hours on the 25th is also counted), with less than usual fluctuations in the ±18 hours immediately before the spikes. |

Over the past few weeks it seems that Echinus was spiking regularly (once per ~5-6 days?) up to ~45°C+ multiple times (most recent one on Dec. 16 around noon reached ~55°C). I may also note that around the 13th of December, the temperature dropped, what seems to be quite drastically, actually, to below 0°C (per Nuphar Lake Logger, this was ambient temperature initially at ~-20°C, then increased on Echinus Logger to just below 0°C, after which it decreased to ~-20°C again). Seems to have held for a few hours, after which the temperature went back to normal (between 20 and 40°C) |

Drops to between ~16°C and ~12°C seemed to be more common - counted 5 or 6 on the 7-day graph. Temperature fluctuated between a narrower range (avg. appx. ~7°C [w/o diurnal variations], sometimes a drop to as low as ~23°C) before these spikes than after (~10°C [w/o diurnal variations]). It appears Echinus kept the narrower range between after the 16th November 2018 spikes and this series of spikes. |

Vixen platform & runoff channel is wet, water pooled in its tube but I did not see an eruption in the 15 minutes I observed. Pearl still has a yellow hue. Porkchop water is back up to the rim of the pool. Green dragon runoff is again clear however the runoff channels are coated in brown. Yellow funnel has no visible water but I can hear deep grumbling with splashing down deep. Echinus water level is good with nice runoff and a weak 2 vent boil. (hum!) Crater Spring water is LOW and murky brown/gray. Emerald Spring is the same, clear, green with weak convection waves.

Vixen is back to more regular play. The steam vent by Vixen is quieter. Pearl has bubbles breaking the surface. Pork chop is down about 4" from the rim. Green dragon is putting out chocolate brown runoff. Yellow funnel is way low, muddy brown and turbulent. Blue mud steam vents water/mud is not visable. Crater Spring water level is low as is Echinus. Echinus run off channel is dry in many areas. This back basin is much the same as last night except for Vixen. sorry for the long note! Forgot about Emerald. . . cuz it is the same! Four more spikes occurred. One around 0300-ish, the other three at approximately 1230, 1430 and 1515. All reached about 45-48°C (113-118°F) and all were followed by a drop to about 15°C (59°F). |

One eruption occured slightly before 2100. The eruption spike reached ~75°C (~167°F). It was preceded by a smaller spike, which reached ~48°C (~118°F). Both spikes were followed by a drop to around 10°C (50°F), the latter one stayed around that temperature for ~2 hours. |

Spike near 16 December 2017 0000 reached ~57°C (~135°F), followed by a drop to ~10°C (~50°F). Spikes then occured irregularly, but generally two or three every three hours. These spikes reached ~45°C to ~50°C (~113°F to ~122°F) and all were followed by drops to between 10°C to 20°C (~50°F to ~68°F). |

Echinus is back! See YVO graph @ https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/yellowstone/yellowstone_monitoring_34.html - (click on attachment below). Best guess from looking at other graphs (Steamboat etc) is that there had been a disturbance in the basin the past few weeks.
An additional comment from my brother, Bob Partner, who has watched Norris graphs consistently for years: "The minors at Steamboat came back after the November 10-12 events but very different character from normal pattern. Disturbances don’t always take the same pattern at Steamboat. I think this was an ongoing disturbance or shift in energy not a classic “disturbance”. The Steamboat graph will tell the tale if it isn’t lost." |

Interestingly, this coincides with the regular cyclic dip in the Steamboat temperatures (shown on the YVO graph), as do the events seen at Echinus on October 31. This event at Echinus is much more extensive than the last one, though. |

Logger data shows that around this time two spikes occured - one just prior to 0900 and one basically at 0900. After the second spike, which reached at max ±50°C, temperature began fluctuating between ±30°C and ±40°C. This was still the case when logger data was downloaded around 1100. |

Upon arrival Echinus had strong roils from BOTH vents, (Very strong from SE vent) similar in appearance to when it is dormant. Sure wonder what happened before that! Left for other things at 1115. HUGE false start @ 1257. Afternoon eruptions all had strong roils from SE vent which is more like the first ones seen 10/22 as opposed to the quick starts of late. Very interesting (freezing) day, glad I was there to see that. |

Had a spike around 0600 MST/0700 MDT, which was followed by ~6 hours of temperature fluctuating between 30 and 40°C (86 - 104°F) concluded by another spike. Erupting activity continued after that. |

Echinus appears to be erupting quite regularly since 18 or 19 October, sometimes preceded by false starts, but pratically all have had a short period of overflowing. YVO logger is apparently relatively far away from Echinus and thus overflowing is not or barely recorded. |

Saw some steam at 1641 from Vixen (super windy day) - when I went to check refill/overflow level on my way out it was almost _exactly_ the same level at 1750 as it was at 1524. Another eruption between? Not filling up? Whatever, it was interesting and so good to see it empty again. |

~17 times quick temperature rises and drops today. Based on three E-times of Echinus minors and two E-times of Echinus 'normals', I think either heavy overflow followed by no or less overflow or minors. |

Echinus has had some quick temperature increases and quick decreases between ~1200 and ~2359. Disclaimer: This is based on logger data alone. It could very well be that these are logger malfunctions, but I thought I'd make a note of it anyway. |

Heavy roiling observed over 3 visits, various times of the day. At this point in the season with fewer observers around, if anyone takes a look, I would love to know if you see smooth convection, or the heavy boiling/roiling. I will note that much, but not bother to post specific hourly observations. |

8/23/98 Echinus is bubbling heavily from the center (where it erupts at) around the prediction time. It’s not quite a “false start” but just heavily bubbling. It subsides then comes again and may do this a few times then there was a false start, then an eruption.,… strange! |
