5128 08 Jun 1980 @ 1800 --- research-mab 06/08/1980 NOTE Ebony Geyser – chugging every second. Water 9 feet down, temperature 200ºF, evidence of splashing to top of vent.
5731 20 Jul 1974 @ 0900 --- research-mab 07/20/1974 Ebony washed out markers placed on Tues 7/16
5720 17 Jun 1974 @ 1100 17 Jun 1974 @ 1238 research-mab 06/17/1974 1100 Fred reports Ebony had 4’ pool. 1135 Ebony drained and quiet. No evidence of recent Bear Den eruption. 06/17/1974 1238 water gurgling and 2’ below rim in Ebony.
5708 16 Jun 1974 @ 1800 --- research-mab 06/16/1974 The water level in Ebony is very high (@ 2’ below crater rim) {no time noted}
20370 09 Jul 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 07/09/1973 Ebony is still taking its turn for being active though markers are still in place → big eruption not yet occurred; Bear Den silent with no recent runoff {generic end of day- no time noted}
6033 08 Jul 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 07/08/1973 Heard near surface gurgling at Ebony & saw water near the mouth indicating it probably is in middle of the small eruption phase.{no times}
6025 24 Jun 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 06/24/1973 Ebony runoff damp 6pm
6007 02 Jun 1973 @ 1750 --- research-mab 06/02/1973 at 550 – possibly some runoff in West Ebony channel
6021 27 May 1973 @ 1409 --- research-mab 05/27/1973 Ebony filled at 1409, then bubbly erupted to height of about 3’ only for duration of 30 seconds then drained immediately.
6005 24 May 1973 @ 1553 --- research-mab 05/24/1973 At 3:53:40 Ebony began filling loudly – went to brim where it stayed until 3:54:40 when Bear Den erupted with one shot, then Ebony drained.
6004 23 May 1973 @ 0855 23 May 1973 @ 0904 research-mab 05/23/1973 At 8:55 Ebony observed to have water level too low to be seen. At 9:04 Ebony gurgled and splashing about 1 ft Filled to the top of its orifice, scaring away a varying hare occupying the same fallen tree as the “Easter Bunny” did when alive (this appeared to be somewhat larger). Ebony did not overflow, but at 9:05 Bear Den erupted for 1 ½ minutes, spewing 5 or 6 times up to about 40 feet. With no breeze the water fell on the right-hand downslope (westward) side of the hill, on several pines in the process of dying.
5997 04 May 1973 @ 2000 --- research-mab 05/04/1973 Ebony probably played today as pools of water were still in the runoff channel.
5994 28 Apr 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 04/28/1973 {no time} Ebony- the vent was observed to be partially filled which suggests that it is getting ready for another big eruption. This possibility is further supported by the fact that there were no eruptions from Bear Den during the night which were strong enough to put out water that could flow down to the south drainage tile under the trail.
6206 22 Apr 1973 @ 1928 22 Apr 1973 @ 2010 research-mab 04/22/1973 At 7:28 pm Ebony was due for another minor eruption. Just previous to this as during all other times there had been intermittent moderate bubbling and occasional boiling. The water started to rapidly rise and quickly reached the level where at all other times the minor eruptions with their vigorous boiling began. However, upon reaching the level at 7:28 the water became very quiet and still – no bubbling or boiling at all. The water remained in this quiet state until 8:05 pm with almost no activity at all. Shortly after 8:05 the surface of the pool of water in the vent began to rise again but in addition, be practically covered with superheated boiling. At 8:06 pm the major eruption began, 87 minutes after the last minor eruption. By this time it was too dark to use the brunton compass to measure the height of eruption for the moon had not yet risen. However, by what little light there was, it is certain that Ebony played well in excess of 40 feet high. Rocks were thrown up into the air with one, approximately, 8 x 13 inches in size, seen heaved up about 10 feet. The style of play was similar to the one observed on March 13th, being a series of fountain-like bursts. They start out in rapid progression at the beginning of the eruption (after the pool has started to overflow) and gradually slow down throughout their period of play until the end. It is at the point of the pool’s overflowing that the geyser starts having tall bursts.
6208 22 Apr 1973 @ 1216 --- research-mab 04/22/1973 Ebony (continued) All of the minor eruptions from 12:16 to 6:39 were followed by the water draining only part way – generally 1 to 1 ½ feet above the narrowest part of the vent. The timing of the durations of the minor eruptions and the major eruption at 8:06 pm was based on the same definitions used yesterday. After 2:33 pm no additional measurements were made to determine how much time was required for the water in the vent to drain down to its lowest level because a white snowshoe rabbit moved in to rest under one of the nearby sinter encrusted logs. It was left undisturbed so that the visitors could have the privilege of seeing &photographing him. Someone claimed it was the “Easter Bunny”! After posing for more than 16 people and staying in one spot less than 20 feet from the vent of Ebony for more than 4 ½ hours the snowshoe casually wandered off at 7:45 pm.
6209 22 Apr 1973 @ 1000 --- research-mab 04/22/1973 Ebony Geyser: Observations were made throughout the day since neither it nor Bear Den had had an eruption during the night.
6017 21 Apr 1973 @ 1900 --- research-mab 04/21/1973 Summary ~ Averages: Interval 45 min, Durations 86 sec, Height 5 feet, Drain 75s It should be noted that the beginning of each minor eruption of Ebony was defined as the point when rapid filling of the vent and vigorous boiling – often super heated, started and would continue through the duration of play un-interrupted. The end of each minor erupted was defined as the point when boiling (vigorous) ceased.
5916 14 Mar 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 03/14/1973 Ebony several small eruptions of Ebony similar to the two which precede the big eruption were observed… Rocks sand and gravel were again ejected by the eruption, with some gravel thrown an estimated 34-50 feet. None of the minor eruptions had any runoff. {in pencil- below: There might be an indicator spring to the South}
5917 12 Mar 1973 @ 1802 --- research-mab 03/12/1973 Ebony Judging by the melted snow, however, last night’s eruption was full-fledged & had considerable run off and spray. The close relationship between Ebony and Bear Den was seen when water was rising in both vents, within 3 feet of the top in Ebony and 4 feet in Bear Den. Immediate as Ebony started to play, rumbling and gurgling was heard in Bear Den and its water level quickly dropped. Normally as observed during the past 3 summers it is just the reverse where Ebony drains & Bear Den plays.)
6345 21 Jun 1972 @ 0850 --- research-mab 06/21/1972 While walking the Porcelain trail and going down to check Ebony it was noticed that Ebony was bubbling fairly violently. Some squirts played above the lip. Then suddenly the activity stopped and Bear Den began to erupt
6316 03 Jun 1972 @ 0945 --- research-mab 06/03/1972 0945 Ebony filled and bubbled but no run-off.
6314 23 May 1972 @ 1000 --- research-mab 05/23/1972 {no time= morning} When I came above Ebony this morning I noticed that the water level was high in the mouth of this geyser. The level continued rising and activity became more vigorous until Bear Den began erupting when the water once again drained back down. Although there was no run-off from Ebony only a slight amount more rise in the water level would have been necessary in order to have run-off. This might account for the lost marker on May 19,1982
6499 15 May 1972 @ 1800 --- research-mab 05/15/1972 Ebony – no sign of eruption, vigorously boiling water 4’ down 200º
6519 13 Sep 1971 @ 0900 --- research-mab 09/13/1971 Ebony probably erupted during the night as there was still some water in the depression of its run off channels. {morning rounds - no time}
6566 16 Aug 1971 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/16/1971 A visitor reported that Ebony had erupted 10’-15’ this afternoon but markers were not washed away
6598 25 Aug 1970 @ 0800 --- research-mab 08/25/1970 During the night Ebony may have had a minor eruption as the markers were slightly disturbed.{morning - no specific time}
6614 21 Aug 1970 @ 1400 --- research-mab 08/22/1970 Bear Den and Ebony markers replaced – visitor reported seeing Ebony and Bear Den go early in afternoon 8-21 {time not noted}
7487 23 Sep 1969 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/23/1969 {End of year synopsis} Averaged about one eruption / day. Went as long as 3 days occasionally. If Bear Den erupted about the time Ebony was ready to erupt, Ebony often delayed several hours. Sometimes, both erupted at same time. Bear Den erupted about 2 times for every eruption of Ebony. Ebony averaged about 15-25 ft. on any eruption that I observed this summer. (JB) Got a water sample at Ebony during and eruption (Sept 23.) for Bob Fournier to analyze. Could see no predictable pattern to Ebony. Often surged H2O 1-3 ft at frequent intervals for several hours before erupting, and then might not erupt if Bear Den played. Other times, appeared very calm and suddenly erupted.
7485 12 Aug 1969 @ 1510 --- research-mab 08/12/1969 All markers in place 310. Ebony bubbling violently.
7493 22 Jul 1969 @ 1800 --- research-mab 07/22/1969 Cleaned several hundred rocks off Ebony. {generic end of day time}
7496 14 Jul 1969 @ 0815 --- research-mab 07/14/1969 {checking markers @ 08:15} Ebony looks like it will play any time
7499 08 Jul 1969 @ 1800 --- research-mab 07/08/1969 {generic time} Threw over 100 rocks off of Ebony and used broom to sweep off small material. Probably one of the few geysers to have its face swept.
7480 19 Sep 1968 @ 1530 --- research-mab 09/19/1968 Replaced markers on Ebony & Bear Den 3:30p Bear Den erupts several times a day. Most eruptions completely remove the marker below the Y formed by the runoff of Ebony & Bear Den. I think Ebony has been erupting less frequently than we have been led to believe this summer. We were under the impression that one marker would suffice, believing that Bear Den did not produce enough water to remove the large marker below the Y.
7435 10 Jun 1968 @ 1200 --- research-mab 06/10/1968 Ebony played some time between 11:00 am and 2:15 pm, marked at 2:15pm.
7427 06 Jun 1968 @ 1515 --- research-mab 06/06/1968 3:15 pm Ebony’s water is down only 2.5 feet but there is no water action at all.
6834 03 Aug 1964 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/03/1964 Ebony had its first minor eruption today without Unnamed playing Height 4 ft. duration 2 min {no specific time noted}
