Latest Notes

Note IDStart Time (US/Mountain)End Time (US/Mountain)EntrantNote
22299 03 Jul 2022 @ 0959 --- DaveM Initial - based on duration
22185 28 Jun 2022 @ 1850 --- deanl there was NO second Lion, just twice it huffed and had false starts
21938 11 Jun 2022 @ 2120 --- Graham Initial
21422 22 May 2022 @ 0921 --- Micah Kipple more roars after this but all dry and weak.
21420 22 May 2022 @ 0854 22 May 2022 @ 0920 Micah Kipple Series of about 4 strong roars that ended the series. Strongest roars with attempts to erupt were 0915 and 0915
20613 09 Dec 2021 @ 1208 --- JarnoO (wc) Large roar d=9s (I would consider it a minor). Included one jet to usual in-series eruptive height; fairly certain end of series.
19712 23 Sep 2021 @ 1916 --- Graham Had another minor 1916. GT merged it.
18447 16 Jul 2021 @ 0853 --- JarnoO (wc) Just post-eruptive
18060 23 Jun 2021 @ 1540 23 Jun 2021 @ 1635 CrisG several nice roars with few splashes seen during this time, but unfortunately no eruption. chased off the hill by impending rain.
17767 14 Jun 2021 @ 0902 --- Kat Lion appears post eruptive when cam moved to hill
16985 05 May 2021 @ 0956 --- JarnoO post-eruptive
16935 27 Apr 2021 @ 1440 --- Micah Kipple Roar with no eruption.
16813 18 Jan 2021 @ 1611 --- Graham Lion was very steamy. Probably post eruptive after the initial.
16784 13 Dec 2020 @ 1510 --- JarnoO Lion-like steam on static. Wind direction not steady, therefore 1510 could also be westernmost edge of Beehive's plume. This would be consistent with (near-)post-eruptive steam seen on 1514 frame. Maybe a dual, since Lion *did* go @ 1344.
16374 09 Oct 2020 @ 0747 --- Kat 0747 Post-eruptive steam noted when cam moved from down basin to the hill.
16202 20 Sep 2020 @ 0757 --- K.Cooper (wc) Lion post-eruptive steaming, most likely initial.
15480 10 Aug 2020 @ 0757 --- JarnoO (wc) Post-eruptive. Possibly initial based on lack of eruption in the hour or so before.
15360 04 Aug 2020 @ 1422 --- JarnoO (wc) Post-eruptive, assuming initial
14835 01 Jul 2020 @ 1820 --- Graham Boardwalk all wet, must have erupted.
14587 10 Jun 2020 @ 1824 --- K.Cooper BW is soaked again, post eruptive, likely went
14576 09 Jun 2020 @ 2018 --- K.Cooper boardwalk is soaked, likely went about thirty minutes ago.
14194 16 May 2020 @ 2120 16 May 2020 @ 2140 MikeG (webcam observation) Roared several times but failed to erupt.
14193 16 May 2020 @ 2010 --- Graham Possible Lion initial around 2210 while the cam was on Old Faithful. Lion steaming gently at 2220.
14183 09 May 2020 @ 1528 --- JarnoO (wc) post-eruptive
14175 21 Apr 2020 @ 0856 --- JarnoO (wc) post-eruptive
14167 09 Apr 2020 @ 1322 --- JarnoO (wc) post-eruptive. Likely the initial
14163 06 Apr 2020 @ 1114 --- JarnoO (wc) Appeared to be post-eruptive
14160 28 Mar 2020 @ 1718 --- Graham Lion had a couple of large splashes, just under what I would call a minor. One and done this series?
14152 18 Mar 2020 @ 1406 --- JarnoO (wc) first observed roar post-1321 eruption
14150 12 Mar 2020 @ 1108 --- JarnoO (wc) Heavy splashing which normally only precedes eruptions. This splashing happened ~3 hours after the last eruption was seen (maybe missed 2 eruptions inbetween the last one and this one if 0817 ie wasn't end of series).
14141 23 Feb 2020 @ 1107 --- Micah Kipple It appears that a piece of formation about the size of a dinner plate broke loose from the decorations near the top of the cone and shattered on the slope. Numerous pieces of geyserite are scattered on the flank of the cone and ilther3 is a new, somewhat noticeable scar on the face. I see no human footprints to indicate vandalism so I suspect it just broke off naturally during an eruption. Perhaps as a result of freeze thaw action.
13536 04 Sep 2019 @ 0835 --- Graham Weak roars, must have had a series that ended this morning.
13516 03 Sep 2019 @ 0933 03 Sep 2019 @ 0940 Micah Kipple Several roars in this period with varying strength but the series is probably over.
13514 03 Sep 2019 @ 0917 --- Micah Kipple Roar but no eruption.
13438 28 Aug 2019 @ 0920 --- c.barwin roar and brief sloshing
13292 16 Aug 2019 @ 2108 --- MikeG (wc) Large roar or small minor eruption at 21:08
13190 12 Aug 2019 @ 1231 --- Betty possibly Lion ie. There was steam visible on VEC static at 1231
12858 28 Jul 2019 @ 1859 --- Kitt B I saw Lion erupting from the cafeteria, apparently near end, but it was ie when I called it. Don't know why it was flagged. Just couldn't put NE (near end) since that isn't a choice. Lion initials can erupt for 6 minutes.
12425 09 Jul 2019 @ 1907 --- K.Cooper Lion had a false start at this time, may have been a minor, but the duration did not stipulate a minor eruption entry.
11533 02 Jun 2019 @ 1733 02 Jun 2019 @ 1907 JSJ Roars at late 1733 to 1734 (= immediately after end of 4th eruption in series). Roars at 1836 and 1841. Roars and water sprays at 1844, 1846, 1848, 1849, and 1851. Soft roars at 1853 and 1856. Soft roars and water sprays at 1900, 1902, 1904, and 1905-1906. Soft roars at 1907.
11213 11 May 2019 @ 1304 --- udo Drinking fountain bubbler is sizzling and spitting to 1-3 inches.
11013 20 Apr 2019 @ 1303 --- Janet Jones Good roar at 1303 and another at 1305 with a little splash of water.
11005 20 Apr 2019 @ 1025 --- PCO Saw Lion ie at 1025. Almost positive its was an initial.
10728 05 Nov 2018 @ 0243 05 Nov 2018 @ 1713 TheHikingDude Why is there a big gap between? Was all entries deleted? Or did it actually not erupt that long?
10646 21 Oct 2018 @ 1158 21 Oct 2018 @ 1211 rbwhitaker Roars at 1158, 1201, 1204, 1205, 1208, 1211 but no Lion.
10620 18 Oct 2018 @ 1536 --- MikeG Possible minor eruption seen on 40x speed GOSA captures.
10389 23 Sep 2018 @ 1252 --- JarnoO 'Minor minor' at this time. To me seemed more than a roar. d=~6s.
10329 21 Sep 2018 @ 1715 --- Kitt B NPS just announced over radio that they will be opening the boardwalk section from Sawmill to Lion and along the front of Geyser Hill sometime this evening.
10390 20 Sep 2018 @ 1010 --- Siegmund Splashing and puffing (not in series yet)
10384 19 Sep 2018 @ 1023 19 Sep 2018 @ 1040 Siegmund Tried and failed to have 20th eruption in yesterday's series. Roars 1023, 1031, and 1037, "sneezes" 1034, 1035, and 1040, but no large splashes or serious attempt at erupting.
10286 18 Sep 2018 @ 1506 --- udo One of the bubblers that normally are only active before an initial is active now, assuming we're in a series.
10033 04 Sep 2018 @ 1926 --- BobInSLC good try at erupting or 30 second minor
9306 27 Jul 2018 @ 1409 --- JarnoO Very good attempt with water just above the cone, though didn't build into an eruption.
8611 10 Jun 2018 @ 0424 --- JarnoO Steaming heavily, some splashes/jets seen. Either late ie or didn't quite manage to erupt. [Edit after 0418 wc ini entry: caught the end of the initial]
8013 27 Apr 2018 @ 0636 --- Micah Kipple Light splashing
7959 12 Mar 2018 @ 1047 --- Kevin L Could have had a 2nd between 1036 and 1047. Cam was zoomed into the Grand eruption during that time. No 3rd, just a few puffs.
7956 08 Mar 2018 @ 1542 --- DaveM major eruption at 1542 after 1539 minor
7948 20 Feb 2018 @ 0435 --- Betty Seemed to erupt, seen on overnight capture, but view was not clear enough to be sure
7881 28 Jan 2018 @ 0715 --- Graham Series of roars but no eruption. Booo.
7854 28 Nov 2017 @ 2222 28 Nov 2017 @ 2359 JarnoO At least 2 eruptions were missed due to steam. Dangit, steam from between Castle and Grand!
7837 22 Nov 2017 @ 0235 --- jh23487 There was a bit of steam from Lion from 0235 to 0236, possibly a minor?
7816 05 Nov 2017 @ 0415 --- JarnoO Appeared to be in a post-eruptive steam phase.
6207 09 Sep 2017 @ 1148 09 Sep 2017 @ 1223 udo 6 roars, 3 with splashes, series ended.
5668 03 Sep 2017 @ 0955 --- udo Last reported eruption was 0608. Bubblers are drooling less than 4 hours afterwards.
4500 19 Jul 2017 @ 1120 --- udo Water is flowing from both bubblers bit not bursting to any significant height yet.
4335 19 Jun 2017 @ 0818 --- JarnoO Have not seen a (potential) Lion eruption on the overnight captures.
4121 23 May 2017 @ 0314 --- JarnoO POSSIBLE eruption. Too dark for me to be certain, even for a questionable entry.
4122 23 May 2017 @ 0143 --- JarnoO POSSIBLE initial of series. Too dark for me to be certain, even for a questionable entry.
3964 01 Apr 2017 @ 1310 --- Betty chat visitor report it is ie. Maybe the initial
3909 14 Jan 2017 @ 0954 --- DaveM Either Lion or Beehive at 0820
3907 09 Jan 2017 @ 0058 --- Betty Maybe erupting, but it could be Beehive as well. Lasted about 6 min, so it was possibly initial
3874 16 Nov 2016 @ 1824 16 Nov 2016 @ 1849 JarnoO Might've erupted or tried to erupt. I cannot tell if it actually DID erupt, since it was quite foggy at 1824 and wasn't able to see any further than Old Faithful at 1849. Series continued till at least 2156.
3781 13 Oct 2016 @ 1409 13 Oct 2016 @ 1429 udo Roars 1409, 1414, 1416, 1417, 1419, 1423,
3741 03 Oct 2016 @ 0252 --- Betty Possible eruption behind OF steam
3681 17 Sep 2016 @ 1639 --- Graham Big splash out of Lion but not enough to call a minor. Looks like a series of 1 unless it can come back from that splash and erupt.
3600 04 Sep 2016 @ 0940 --- BobInSLC Almost erupted, strongest try without going I've seen. lasted 2 minutes.
3564 28 Aug 2016 @ 1431 --- Betty One tall burst, lasted ~20 sec
3506 18 Aug 2016 @ 1505 18 Aug 2016 @ 1513 Casey Two powerful seconds-long surges at 1505 and 1513 observed on webcam. There was debate as to whether they qualified as minor eruptions or not.
3125 23 Jun 2016 @ 1113 --- udo Roar 1113. Roarlet 1114 & 1123 & 1126 & 1128
3058 12 Jun 2016 @ 0043 --- JarnoO MAY have erupted. It was suddenly in the background very steamy while OF erupted and I'm pretty sure it wasn't the steam of OF.
2960 03 Jun 2016 @ 1516 03 Jun 2016 @ 1628 JSJ Noticed Lion spits at 1516, 1525, 1530, 1542, 1543, 1605, and 1628.

2653 17 Jan 2016 @ 1529 17 Jan 2016 @ 1541 JSJ Eruption # 2 in Lion Geyser's series very likely occurred while webcam was focused on Grand Geyser's 1529 to 1541 eruption.
2649 17 Jan 2016 @ 0745 --- Graham Doing terminal roars, no more eruptions in series.
2644 15 Jan 2016 @ 1700 15 Jan 2016 @ 1715 JSJ Brief eruptive spouting from late 1700 to early 1701 & at 1714.
