21288 15 May 2022 @ 1410 15 May 2022 @ 1420 mwolf small bursts every few minutes
21205 06 May 2022 @ 1054 --- MAB channel green
20180 28 Oct 2021 @ 0844 --- MAB channel below Pinwheel a striking dark green - a few white stripes immediately below small features but green returns asap and continues til it meets Whirligig runoff at the BW bridge just above the logger
20001 16 Oct 2021 @ 1338 --- cb Run off channel is back to mostly green color
19232 01 Sep 2021 @ 0902 --- MAB more green returning in center of channels not just edges - still very dark green upstream of Pinwheel's vent
18761 31 Jul 2021 @ 1500 --- MAB After a heavy rain Pinwheel runoff changed to pea soup color - then to pistachio ice cream color - then to bad 2% milk color - during the deluge these colors were visible above Pinwheel - after waters went down more pronounced below Pinwheel
18769 31 Jul 2021 @ 0845 --- MAB dark green above Pinwheel vent - more green growing on edges of channel farther down - center channels still white with tiny flecks of green
18667 25 Jul 2021 @ 1819 --- cb Edges of the pool are not green, they are muddy gray and pool is low by 4". Runoff channels are basically still white with more green algae on the sides than last observed.
18472 14 Jul 2021 @ 1720 --- MAB Channel still white with faint green developing in some spots along edges and past the boardwalk - very green above Pinwheel's vent area - nothing upstream has pushed out hot water
17861 16 Jun 2021 @ 0850 --- novakg Pinwheel runoff continues to be scoured white.
17839 15 Jun 2021 @ 0840 --- novakg Laurie reports that Pinwheel's runoff channel has been scoured of the green stuff and is now white.
17543 07 Jun 2021 @ 0903 --- MAB channel still green above and below Pinwheel - but there are some whitish spots farther down
14544 05 Jun 2020 @ 0903 --- bbev Tall, billowing, steam column coming from Pinwheel area. Normally green runoff channel coming from that area, now a brilliant white. Runoff under boardwalk mostly white, having taken even some of the red out of Whirligig's channel.
12926 01 Aug 2019 @ 1230 01 Aug 2019 @ 1530 cb copious discharge coming from the pinwheel area and above it that is starting to change the runoff channel color to a pockmarked light green. No eruption seen.
11586 04 Jun 2019 @ 1321 04 Jun 2019 @ 1517 novakg From at least 1321 until 1517 when we left, the area near Pinwheel was "blooping," for lack of a better word. These could be seen above the bern from the Constant bench and would slightly increase the runoff from that direction.
11027 20 Apr 2019 @ 0930 --- MAB Water in runoff channel slightly murky, probably from features upstream of Pinwheel but worth mentioning.
10722 04 Nov 2018 @ 0954 --- MAB Definite convection over the vent. Earlier this summer noticed the white below Pinwheel never grew back after the July eruption - now with the algae dark dark dark DARK green the white stripe is is very pronounced. Water entering from above is green.
3308 14 Jul 2016 @ 1040 --- MAB Runoff continues in formerly dry 3rd (west) channel. 60C and green is not returning until downstream of Splutterpot. The increased flow may be from Sand Spring but that channel above Pinwheel's crater is still dark green.
3017 08 Jun 2016 @ 1500 08 Jun 2016 @ 2000 MAB Pinwheel runoff brighter white, twigs wet and moved, some water in 3rd (west) runoff channel. Basin had been closed due to thermal death incident, but I will ask staff if they had seen anything out of Pinwheel since the 5th when things are calmer.
2484 05 Oct 2015 @ 1055 --- MAB Steamy morning. Upon arrival 1030 water was flowing in the 3rd (west) runoff channel and the flat sinter spot was half-wet and debris moved to the east. Just before 1055 I noticed increased steam and runoff, and saw the flat sinter spot was submerged. A push from Pinwheel, or something else upstream? Too steamy to tell, but it's worth watching. Though I saw that flow increase, green is growing back in the 2 easterly channels.
2399 21 Sep 2015 @ 0940 --- MAB Flat sinter area in westerly runoff channel, my visual 'marker' (not the formerly green and not with water currently flowing) was wet upon arrival, and dried off and remained dry the rest of the day. Convection seen in the pool later in the warmth of day at 1352 and 1625 (the times I looked, not implying that's the only time it had convection)
2376 18 Sep 2015 @ 1151 --- MAB Slight convection in the vent observed all day when visiting this spot. I left to go watch Graceful and get the end. Upon my return the runoff was cloudy, and a previously dry area in the most westerly runoff channel (not the ones usually green) was wet. It was dry again by afternoon. Unknown if this came from a Pinwheel push or from that thing upstream around the corner. I include the time here in case we see it on YVO, but (!) Whirligig started right after that, so will probably be indistinguishable.
2355 15 Sep 2015 @ 0948 15 Sep 2015 @ 1748 MAB Lots of water coming through the pool from above on a rainy steamy day. Slight convection in the vent and a few blips were observed in late afternoon 1548,1735. I will observe the spouter around the corner and watch for lulls to see how the Pinwheel pool looks then. No sign of green regrowth in the runoff channel.
7627 11 Feb 1984 @ 1800 --- research-mab 02/11/1984 Pinwheel Geyser - Slowly being filled with sediment, slightly turbid, dark green algae present.
4621 29 Sep 1980 @ 1800 --- research-mab 9/29/1980 Pinwheel Geyser was likewise drained and considerably hotter- water level was down 16 inches temp 195 -There was absolutely no water flowing into or out of Pinwheel
4613 22 Sep 1980 @ 1800 --- research-mab 9/22/1980 Pinwheel Dark gray, turbid, and gently bubbling from close to a dozen locations, small amount of water flowing in and out at 10:30. By 11:10 Pinwheel had drained serving as a receptacle for water flowing from northern portions of Porcelain Basin.
5023 17 Jun 1979 @ 1400 --- research-mab 06/17/1979 By 1400 this afternoon Pinwheel had cleared up considerably and was no longer boiling up. Blue Geyser back in operation by 1345
5022 17 Jun 1979 @ 1015 --- research-mab 06/17/1979 Pinwheel may be reactivating. The pool is very muddy, with increased overflow and periodic boiling several inches high. Must keep an eye on Pinwheel. Periodically splashing up to 2’
5120 06 Sep 1977 @ 1200 06 Sep 1977 @ 1730 research-mab 09/06/1977 The drain-fill cycle of Pinwheel is related to the drain-fill-erupt pattern of Blue Geyser. At ~1200 Blue was erupting & Pinwheel was full. At 1730 Blue was drained & Pinwheel was losing water.
5127 29 Aug 1977 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/29/1977 Pinwheel Geyser is drained down about a foot or so that there is no runoff and only a small amount of incoming water.
5118 21 Aug 1977 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/21/1977 After the influx of water comes the lack of water in Sand Spring is no longer overflowing so less water is draining into Pinwheel. More water flows out of Pinwheel than is flowing in.
5558 21 Jul 1976 @ 1520 21 Jul 1976 @ 1600 research-mab 07/21/1976 Pinwheel shows increased activity this p.m. Large splashes witnessed from 3:20 to nearly 4:00.
5561 14 Jul 1976 @ 1800 --- research-mab 07/14/1976 Pinwheel geyser was bubbling to a height of 2’. It seems to be loosing its algal bed. Also rocks have been thrown in this area.
5541 06 Jul 1976 @ 1800 --- research-mab 07/06/1976 Pequito has been acting in its usual pattern while Pinwheel has been ejecting more silt & rather vigorous bubbling.
5539 30 Jun 1976 @ 0845 --- research-mab 06/30/1976 {Pequito erupting....} Eroded channels near boardwalk were dry, but Pinwheel was splashing away and emitting loud popping sounds.
5532 25 Jun 1976 @ 1230 --- research-mab 06/25/1976 Pinwheel -- renewed activity. Small eruptions were coming from main vent during Little Whirligig 1230 (Time approximately 1230)
5701 07 Sep 1975 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/07/1975 Pinwheel continues to fluctuate, sometimes overflowing other times not.
5692 31 Aug 1975 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/31/1975 Runoff channel from Pinwheel full of water at 0845 but dry about noon.
5663 29 Aug 1975 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/29/1975 Noticeable decrease in amount of runoff from Porcelain Basin. Channel from Pinwheel Geyser almost dry.
5766 16 Aug 1974 @ 0830 --- research-mab 08/16/1974 Pinwheel 0830 bubbling w/ runoff from Blue.
5759 15 Aug 1974 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/15/1974 Pinwheel erupting to 6’ in pm
6100 05 Sep 1973 @ 1845 --- research-mab 09/05/1973 P.B. at 6:45 - runoff extending from Sieve Lake into Pinwheel G
6095 04 Sep 1973 @ 1000 --- research-mab 09/04/1973 Blue Geyser still sending off much runoff which increases runoff into/out of Pinwheel (which shows more runoff into than yesterday-) also a little more drainage from the N ← not from Sand Spring.
6061 29 Aug 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/29/1973 Pinwheel→ no runoff into it.
6103 28 Aug 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/28/1973 Water once again draining into Pinwheel G. & quite a bit (though not normal) of water in its runoff channels.
6085 26 Aug 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/26/1973 – still no runoff into Pinwheel
6083 25 Aug 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/25/1973 No water draining into Pinwheel-→ still it is not erupting. Sign Change !!
6078 22 Aug 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/22/1973 Sand Spring, north of Pinwheel Geyser ceased runoff water (probably) this afternoon, its runoff channel is dry red-iron; this change has markedly decreased the runoff water into Pinwheel.
6062 19 Aug 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/19/1973 Pinwheel bubbling somewhat more violently than yesterday.
6447 02 Sep 1972 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/02/1972 Pinwheel Geyser – is now full with most bubbling action ended -a very little is continuing from a couple of the cracks in the bottom. Runoff through Pinwheel from Sand Spring & the small springs to the NE is almost completely back up to normal.
6442 31 Aug 1972 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/31/1972 Water flowing back into Pinwheel Geyser
6441 26 Aug 1972 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/26/1972 Water level down to lowest observed level so far in the Whale’s Mouth, while the pool of Pinwheel Geyser is almost refilled. (Bubbling action is present in 17 points in the base of the pool.)
6421 23 Aug 1972 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/23/1972 Water is re entering Pinwheel Geyser again from springs to the N & NE but not from Sand Spring.
6439 23 Aug 1972 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/23/1972 Water is re entering Pinwheel Geyser again from springs to the N & NE but not from Sand Spring.
6419 20 Aug 1972 @ 1630 --- research-mab 08/20/1972 Pinwheel empty at 4:30
6427 19 Aug 1972 @ 0800 --- research-mab 08/19/1972 Water level in Porcelain Basin is continuing to drop-off Pinwheel Geyser’s water level was down 12-13 inches at 8:00 as there was no water coming into it from Sand Spring.
6438 18 Aug 1972 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/18/1972 Pinwheel at lowest level ever observed water level down 10-15” with absolutely no water running either in or out! {no specific time}
6437 17 Aug 1972 @ 0940 --- research-mab 08/17/1972 By 9:40 Pinwheel geyser full w/runoff.
6436 17 Aug 1972 @ 0830 17 Aug 1972 @ 0930 research-mab 08/17/1972 Pinwheel G with absolutely no runoff 8:30-9:30, however the small frying pans N of the enclosure at Pinwheel contain more water than has been observed there for the last three days. Temp=78.5º (when drained)
6414 16 Aug 1972 @ 1530 16 Aug 1972 @ 1640 research-mab 08/16/1972 Pinwheel – empty at 3:30 (no run off) – at least 4:40
6479 15 Aug 1972 @ 0800 15 Aug 1972 @ 1545 research-mab 08/15/1972 Pinwheel G – full with normal discharge 8:00 AM {Down 1 inch 3:45pm)
6390 13 Aug 1972 @ 1000 --- research-mab 08/13/1972 By 10:00 Pinwheel was again full with almost normal amount of water flowing into and out of the pool.
6380 11 Aug 1972 @ 1730 --- research-mab 08/11/1972 Pinwheel Geyser had completely drained by 5:30 pm.
6471 02 Oct 1971 @ 1800 --- research-mab 10/02/1971 Pinwheel Geyser – water clear but only around 60% normal runoff.
6515 26 Sep 1971 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/26/1971 The water levels and thermal activities are continuing to fluctuate abnormally. Pinwheel Geyser has drained again with the water level this morning 2 inches below the overflow point. In addition there is not as much water flowing into it as yesterday. By afternoon Pinwheel was overflowing again since there is more discharge from the Sand Geyser area.
6569 25 Sep 1971 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/25/1971 Pinwheel has regained its status of being “drowned” although the water level is still 1½ to 2” below normal; Sand spring to the north of it has runoff again and as a result so does Pinwheel, but not the full normal amount. RH
6508 18 Sep 1971 @ 0900 --- research-mab 09/18/1971 The water level in Pinwheel rose during the night and it is almost completely full now. {assumed morning time}
6507 16 Sep 1971 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/16/1971 Since there is very little water draining into Pinwheel Geyser it has become almost empty.
6512 14 Sep 1971 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/14/1971 Some new changes noted in Porcelain: Pinwheel now acts like a drain, almost all water flowing into it’s basin disappears down vent, very little run-off, also has gray clay deposits.
6584 09 Sep 1971 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/09/1971 At Pinwheel there was also an increase in the bubbling action but t was limited to a small (10 inch) area away from the deepest part of the submerged geyser. {evening obs}
6868 07 Jun 1965 @ 1800 --- research-mab 06/07/1965 H20 (cold) is running into both Constant & Pinwheel – it is doubtful that they are erupting. It seems to me that the activity in the Porcelain Basin is much increased from last year. Could be due to increased H20 supply.
6802 30 Oct 1964 @ 1800 --- research-mab 10/30/1964 Pinwheel has developed either a green mineral deposit or a green algal growth within the past few days.
6799 24 Oct 1964 @ 1800 --- research-mab 10/24/1964 Pinwheel & Constant are inactive.
6782 23 Oct 1964 @ 1800 --- research-mab 10/23/1964 Pinheel is overflowing but cold.
6780 18 Oct 1964 @ 1800 --- research-mab 10/18/1964 Pinwheel has dropped again.
6769 16 Oct 1964 @ 1800 --- research-mab 10/16/1964 Pinwheel is now overflowing.
6755 10 Oct 1964 @ 1800 --- research-mab 10/10/1964 Pinwheel is overflowing a very little.
6742 09 Oct 1964 @ 1800 --- research-mab 10/09/1964 Pinwheel is all but dry – no overflow – temperature 128º
6713 05 Oct 1964 @ 1800 --- research-mab 10/05/1964 Porcelain Basin observed from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm Pinwheel is unchanged from yesterday afternoon.
6703 04 Oct 1964 @ 1800 --- research-mab 10/04/1964 Pinwheel has gained a little was but is only 121ºF.
6698 03 Oct 1964 @ 0800 --- research-mab 10/03/1964 Pinwheel Geyser was drained at 8AM and remained that way all day.
6832 06 Aug 1964 @ 1200 --- research-mab 08/06/1964 Blue – erupted in morning. Therefore there was no activity out of Pinwheel or Splutter Pot. {generic AM time}
6659 13 Jul 1964 @ 0800 13 Jul 1964 @ 1231 research-mab 07/13/1964 The overflow water from Blue was emptying into Pinwheel, causing it to be very inactive.
10807 01 Jul 1933 @ 0000 --- research-mab June 1933 Report: Pinwheel Geyser – no observed eruptions {NOTE first mention of Pinwheel found in the literature -mab}
