Note: | 06/18/1972 The main water phase lasted 22 min as at the end of that period the main vent began to get less intense and the southeastern “little finger” vent stopped. Three minutes later the SE vent began to play again, continuing to do so during the remainder of the observed part of the water phase.
During the main water phase the maximum height of the main NW vent could not be measured but was well over 100 feet. Note many of today’s geyser heights were cut off by wind.
The SE vent was measured to have a maximum height of 57 feet during this phase while the “index finger” vent played an estimated 20-25 feet. During the early part of the eruption (the first 10-15 minutes) a great deal of muddy water washed into Jetsam Pool which in turn overflowed to the NW. Near the end there were very strong concussions beneath the pool of water that covered the SE vent very similar to an exploding submarine mine. They could be felt more than 50 feet away.
After the 3 minute pause of the SE vent put on another spectacular fountain eruption reaching a measured height of 35 feet. At 1 hour into the eruption, the water phase was still in progress with a moderate jets of water shooting out 40-50 feet from the man vent; at 1 ½ hours the jet from the vent was reaching 30-40 feet and at 2 hours when observations were ended because of heavy fog & dropping temperatures (35ºF) the main vent was still playing out 30-50 feet. |
