| Comments: | From David Monteith in the Oct 1997 Sput: "While Lower Mortar eruptions were seen on other days the fun really started on 8/20. At about 0230 that morning Heinrich Koenig saw an eruption of Fan and Mortar. You can imagine our surprise when at 1232 Lower Mortar had a minor. No one had expected the system to recover that quickly. After the minor the activity of F&M’s vents mimics what you would expect to see just prior to an eruption of F&M. It is a strange sight. Especially when you know no eruption is imminent. Between Rocco Paperiello Lynn Stephens and Henry James and myself LM minors seen that day occurred at 1232 1424 1507 1543 and 1548."
