| Comments: | 8-28-83 Steamboat was observed in eruption as I drove down Blanding Hill toward Norris. Just a glimpse of the water was visible above tree top. Starting time was 1358 MDT for an interval of 65 days 18 hours 33 minutes from the June 23rd eruption. Upon arrival an estimated 3400 liters/minute were flowing down both runoff channels. A small to moderate amount of water was still being ejected at a sharp angle upslope to to an estimate height of 30m. All cars in the parking lot were being heavily showered with silica & a fine clay-rich spray. Rocks were also being ejected upslope out of the main vent like from a cannon. Many were still fist size the projectile angle will have to be computed {estimated 45-60’}. Maximum height of the rocks and gravel about 15 minutes into the eruption was guessed to be between 30 & 40 meters. In the excitement no one bothered to look at their watch to gauge duration of the water phase but interviewing those present gave figures of 3 to 8 minutes. To compound the problem it seems probable that there was no sharp transition from water to steam phase. |
