4847 19 Aug 1985 @ 2100 --- research-mab Bear Den 8/19/1985: Interesting Note: Bear Den would always make deep rumbling soon before it erupts & the water (greenish looking) in Ebony Geyser would come to the surface. On the long intervals 5 hours or so- Bear Den Geyser would rumble & so forth first would not erupt – always 3 to 3 ½ hours from the previous eruption.
4845 07 Jul 1985 @ 0818 --- research-mab BEAR DEN 7/7/1985 Also at 8:18 a.m. - water shot out briefly in one spurt/burst to 5 to 10 feet then back in its hole. Most of the eruptions, the first bursts were smaller while the middle and later ones were bigger. The height in the bursts were up to 50 to 70 feet. About 1 minute or so before the eruption, there was a loud brief gurgling sound from deep within the Geyser.
4667 30 May 1983 @ 1800 --- research-mab 5/30/1983 V.R. (reliable geyser gazer) that Bear Den had all the normal preliminary signs of a typical eruption except that all that happened was one, 1’ splash.
4619 27 Sep 1980 @ 1800 --- research-mab 9/27/1980 Bear Den Geyser – has been erupting turbid gray water

4594 04 Aug 1980 @ 1100 --- research-mab Aug 4 1980 Ebony NOTE: after an eruption of Bear Den Ebony Geyser is quiet and then slowly builds up, making a chug[g]ing noise. This noise grows stronger and slows down from as high as 8’s a minute to 4-5 minutes before an eruption of Bear Den, Ebony will become totally quiet. Before a steam puff Ebony stops later, and not so completely 10-15 seconds before a steam puff Ebony may start to splash heavily inside the crater like a small eruption, and emit more steam
4975 12 Jun 1980 @ 1045 --- research-mab 06/12/1980 NOTE- there is conflicting info in Log: “Bear Den went again, sometime around 10:30-11:00 producing a interval between 1 ½ hrs to 2 hrs.” 1008 was inserted later from a different observer- with burst count seemed like a solid time. mab
5001 10 Sep 1979 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/10/1979 Bear Den is apparently a more complicated geyser than we think. While standing at the vent dangling the thermometer into the cavern inside, Bear Den began a bubbling sound. I immediately ran away from the vent just in time to avoid a single 10’ splash. No other play, no water apparent even 10’ down. Perhaps it doesn’t like getting its throat tickled.
5007 25 May 1979 @ 1800 --- research-mab May 25 1979 Bear Den Seems quite active with eruptions maybe 3-4 hours apart.
5746 11 Aug 1974 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/11/1974 Bear Den: active today
5732 20 Jul 1974 @ 1800 --- research-mab 07/20/1974 Bear Den active today.
6034 10 Jul 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 07/10/1973 Runoff channel from Bear Den was wet -- apparently it resumed eruptive activity without a large eruption of Ebony (or so it appears) {no time}
6011 12 Jun 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 06/12/1973 {no time} Bear Den had some warm H20 in run-off channel played only several minutes previous
6018 24 Apr 1973 @ 1500 --- research-mab 04/24/1973 Observations were ended after 300pm due to the poor visibility and wet conditions. The large rock which is now lying in front of the vent has seriously altered the style or character of Bear Den’s eruptions. They seem to be of shorter durations & less height. Boiling at depth could be heard from the vent for well over a minute after the last bursts- which is an unusually long time. Angle of play of the water bursts varied between 40 and 50º)
6016 23 Apr 1973 @ 0800 --- research-mab 04/23/1973 Bear Den Geyser played during the night, thus ending a period of about 50 hours of inactivity. {general a.m. time}
6205 22 Apr 1973 @ 0000 --- research-mab 04/22/1973 Bear Den has not played since Friday. {no time}
5972 21 Apr 1973 @ 0800 --- research-mab 04/21/1973 Bear Den: From the snow in the runoff channel it was apparent that Bear Den Geyser did not play at all last night. In addition its runoff channel remained dry all day today. This was due to the activity of Ebony. {no time-morning check}
5926 24 Mar 1973 @ 1800 --- research-mab 03/24/1973 Since it has been established during the previous weeks that Bear Den (except briefly while Ebony was active) and Feisty Geysers (currently) have intervals between eruptions which are normally no more than 8 hours – at the very most, it is no longer deemed necessary to replace markers in their runoff channels. Normal observations will be maintained on them with the other features to detect if their eruptive pattern changes however.
6485 11 Sep 1972 @ 1200 --- research-mab 09/11/1972 Bear Den, Dark Cavern, Africa. L. Whirligig, Blue, Fireball & Arsenic all have been observed in eruption this morning. {generic a.m. time}
6480 25 Jul 1972 @ 1100 --- research-mab 07/25/1972 BEAR DEN “No eruption until at least 11”
6355 24 Jul 1972 @ 1800 --- research-mab 07/24/1972 Bear Den erupted with 13 bursts – Ebony filled but no run-off {no time noted}
6348 08 Jul 1972 @ 1200 --- research-mab 07/08/1972 {No time- around noonish} Two visitors reported seeing Bear Den go off. In both cases they were watching Ebony build up then they noticed Bear Den began to play.
6319 08 Jun 1972 @ 1548 --- research-mab 06/08/1972 Africa, Bear Den, Ledge, L. Whirligig, Arsenic and Possibly Blue (crossed out “Iris”) were all erupting at the same time at 3:48
6500 15 May 1972 @ 1800 --- research-mab 05/15/1972 Bear Den – erupts as last year, several times daily, temp of steam in fissure 192º
6558 16 Jul 1971 @ 1005 16 Jul 1971 @ 1835 research-mab 07/16/1971 {markers replaced} Bear Den and Valentine 5:55p, Bear Den replaced 10:05, also at 6:35p
6550 30 Jun 1971 @ 0915 --- research-mab NOTE: Logs have frequent and specific daily or hourly notes of replacing markers - Ledge, Valentine, Guardian, Ebony and Bear Den. I will include only those that might indicate intervals. MAB 06/30/1971 Replaced Bear Den at 9:15 all others ok. Replaced Bear Den 1230
6549 24 Jun 1971 @ 1200 --- research-mab 06/24/1971 Bear Den channel clean in front of tile under trail, channel was full of water from an eruption sometime during the previous 15 minutes. {morning-no time}

6586 03 Jun 1970 @ 1030 --- research-mab 06/03/1970 Bear Den replaced 10:30 and 4:30 NOTE: Markers checked several times a day – I will only include some that might have interval information -mab
7479 19 Sep 1968 @ 1530 --- research-mab 09/19/1968 Replaced markers on Ebony & Bear Den 3:30p Bear Den erupts several times a day. Most eruptions completely remove the marker below the Y formed by the runoff of Ebony & Bear Den. I think Ebony has been erupting less frequently than we have been led to believe this summer. We were under the impression that one marker would suffice, believing that Bear Den did not produce enough water to remove the large marker below the Y.
7109 10 Jul 1966 @ 1800 --- research-mab 07/10/1966 All afternoon Bear Den went after each interval of Ebony without fail (B.L.)
6888 21 Jun 1965 @ 1800 --- research-mab 06/21/1965 Bear Den – 15-25 minutes between intervals (25 ft)
6835 03 Aug 1964 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/03/1964 Ebony had its first minor eruption today without Unnamed {Bear Den} playing Height 4 ft. duration 2 min {no specific time noted}
