[Taken from Jeff Cross's listserv report] The eruption column quickly reached full height, with a thunderous sound. The north vent erupted the highest. Using a powerful flashlight, I saw spikes of water at the top of the column fall away to reveal billows reaching even higher. Darkness prevented a good estimate of the eruption height. The sound of the eruption was audible at the campground, just over a mile away, but the sound was not arresting. At 0110, muddy water was thrown from the north vent. At about the same time, I noticed that the west runoff channel was full. Despite the immense size of the eruption, there was less runoff than I would have expected. At 0114, occasional bursts of steam erupted from the north vent, under extreme pressure. The sound of these bursts was like cannon fire. A similar, though weaker, phenomenon occurs at Grand Geyser and at Cliff Geyser, where steam under pressure is forced through a pool of water. At 0125, there was a continuous roaring steam phase. At 0126, the eruption column contained only vapor and atomized liquid. At 0127, the power increased further, and a high pitch sound became audible, over the loud roaring. At 0131, there was no longer any runoff. To converse with others, it was necessary to use a raised voice. It was not necessary to shout. The sound of the steam phase was never deafening. The steam phase continued, slowly diminishing through 0400. By 0248, steam ejection from the south vent weakened, but the north vent still steamed violently. When I left at 0400, the steam phase could be plainly heard in the parking lot, but it was not arresting. It could not be heard at Norris Junction. A mist of geyser spray fell over the south end of the parking lot and the entrance road.
