19076 25 Aug 2021 @ 1149 --- kc Slight pause about 5 minutes in. Good height.
18802 02 Aug 2021 @ 1503 --- cb pool VERY low, just above the inner vent. lots of red rim exposed. just recently erupted. ~10-20m ago.
18663 25 Jul 2021 @ 1814 --- cb As I approached Porcelain basin I saw that Whirligig's pool was VERY LOW. ~5'. I just missed a full eruption. Walked down and the pool was filling but still had 4' of exposed red. Walked away figuring I had a long wait and was surprised when I got above Hurricane Vent to see Graceful and heard it ie @ 1839. Pool was NOT in overflow when it erupted! End 1841.
18487 17 Jul 2021 @ 1917 --- cb I just missed a full eruption by minutes. Pool was drained exposing 5' of red rim.
18391 12 Jul 2021 @ 1207 12 Jul 2021 @ 1212 cb pool not in overflow but the side vent is playing 1" - 2". nothing from other vents.
18237 01 Jul 2021 @ 1008 01 Jul 2021 @ 1024 JarnoO Logger probe replaced. Previously averaged around 20°C with Whirligig spikes reaching up to 45°C or higher, current trace averages around 50°C with Whirligig spikes reaching up to 70°C or higher.
19271 24 Jun 2021 @ 0541 24 Jun 2021 @ 0633 MAB NOTE to future researchers - Missing from the data here is a Whirligig minor at 0541 and a full eruption at 0633. Based on the YVO temperature trace, the interval information here is incomplete. These eruptions were disputed and deleted, but I believe they should be included, or at least a future researcher can make the choice to include them, or not, in their study of Whirligig, so I note them here.
17752 13 Jun 2021 @ 1630 --- cb A phenomenal amount of HOT water coming down the channel from pinwheel that has turned pinwheels channel whiteish. Channel SMELLS BAD, like decayed organic matter!
17751 13 Jun 2021 @ 1302 --- novakg Whirligig's pool recovered. 27 minute recovery.
17345 01 Jun 2021 @ 1435 --- Bhoffer Attempted eruption. Pool fully recovered at 1501.
17283 30 May 2021 @ 1449 --- cb ~1' below over flow
17207 27 May 2021 @ 0902 --- MAB refilling - ~2ft red shore exposed
17019 09 May 2021 @ 1315 09 May 2021 @ 1400 cb pool was high and in overflow during this time period. side and shore vent played briefly 3 times while we waited. once right before the Constant eruption and just before Constants pool crashes.
16988 05 May 2021 @ 0655 --- JarnoO From this time the number of non-minors increased while there were hardly any minors. Also no minors between the last two non-minors. In previous years, an increase in non-minors while simultaneously the number of minors decreased, announced the arrival of a disturbance.
16869 05 Apr 2021 @ 1051 05 Apr 2021 @ 1133 JarnoO No data
16857 01 Mar 2021 @ 1146 02 Mar 2021 @ 1309 JarnoO No data between these times.
16828 24 Jan 2021 @ 1602 --- markwolf looks low from overlook. post eruption? lots of silty runoff from graceful area hitting logger
16814 19 Jan 2021 @ 1200 --- JarnoO Appears to have almost completed the switch to solely non-minor eruptions in the previous 24h.
16812 17 Jan 2021 @ 1500 18 Jan 2021 @ 1200 JarnoO Minors started to become more spaced out around 1500 January 17 and occurred roughly hourly by 1800. This culminated into the first non-minor since ±April/May 2020 at 0220 January 18. It has since had two non-minors before logger data was uploaded @ 1200. Previous disturbances featured Whirligig switching from exclusively minors to exclusively non-minors for roughly the duration of the disturbance. Therefore, my assumption is that there's a disturbance currently ongoing at Norris.
13708 15 Sep 2019 @ 1219 --- Skookum False start w/ pulsating over main vent with two splashes, splashing from rooster tail, and heavy overflow before subsiding to a light overflow.
13707 15 Sep 2019 @ 1156 --- Skookum False start w/ pulsating over main vent, splashing from rooster tail, and heavy overflow before subsiding to a light overflow.
13706 15 Sep 2019 @ 1130 --- Skookum False start w/ pulsating over main vent, splashing from rooster tail, and heavy overflow before subsiding to a light overflow.
13563 04 Sep 2019 @ 0945 --- novakg The next eruption was a major. A woman I met at Whirligig stayed after I left and later showed me the video on her phone. Definitely a major and she estimated the duration to be around 4 minutes.
13243 14 Aug 2019 @ 1412 --- cb very brief weak attempt to start. pool stayed in overflow
13242 14 Aug 2019 @ 1207 --- cb weak attempt to erupt
11588 04 Jun 2019 @ 1419 --- novakg NQAM. Can't save this as an eruption. Don't know why.
11587 04 Jun 2019 @ 1335 --- novakg NQAM. Can't submit this as an eruption. IDK.
11247 15 May 2019 @ 1323 --- cb once again Whirligig started to boil, all the vents started, the helicopter sound started: played for a few seconds and then Constant started and Whirligig stopped. pool stayed at overflow level.
11246 15 May 2019 @ 1247 --- cb played for 25s. 1 small (< 1') burst from main vent. rooster tail tried to start. pool did not drain. still in overflow. started to make the helicopter sounds but quit quickly. * Constant erupted just before this and still had a boil when Whirligig started.
11228 13 May 2019 @ 1811 13 May 2019 @ 1813 steve Whirligig tried to start twice with both rooster tails active for 30 second and heavy convection over the main vent. About 2 minutes apart.
11227 13 May 2019 @ 1741 --- steve Whirligig tried to start. The pool had a big convection and the rooster tail vent erupted for15-20 seconds, then went quiet and the pool dropped about a centimeter or less. No eruption from the main vent.
10969 01 Apr 2019 @ 0500 --- JarnoO It looks as if Whirligig has switched, without much of a transition, to an eruptive pattern consisting out of largely 'major'/'normal' eruptions since 0000 on 30 March 2019.
10774 20 Dec 2018 @ 1400 --- JarnoO Whirligig seems to have entered a phase with what seems to be very frequent minor eruptions (up to 6+ per 3 hours) and few majors (one or two or even none per day). This seems to have developed gradually since December 2.
10537 03 Oct 2018 @ 1210 --- cb The bench is back!
10029 04 Sep 2018 @ 1557 --- novakg Appeared to be in recovery after an eruption. I didn't go down the hill for a closer look.
9430 03 Aug 2018 @ 0820 --- WillBoekel light overflow
8846 22 Jun 2018 @ 1205 --- User34 First overflow about this time
8679 14 Jun 2018 @ 1614 --- cb false start or a minor. not sure what to call it. Nice explosive start with all vents playing and then it suddenly stopped. pool drained a few inches but recovered to overflow in 25m. I had to leave at 1645 and no eruption by that point
8182 13 May 2018 @ 1348 --- sfavor erupted sometime in the last hour
7725 20 Oct 2017 @ 1757 --- MAB Post eruptive 1757 - I don't usually put these in but thought I would since YVO isn't updating.
7720 17 Oct 2017 @ 0935 --- MAB seen refilling - 2nd day in a row I arrive 'missed it by that much'
5869 04 Sep 2017 @ 2045 --- novakg No eruption as of 2045. Full pool and no eruption heard while leaving the basin.
4592 31 Jul 2017 @ 1100 --- MAB YVO reset the clock in the Constant logger.
4764 31 Jul 2017 @ 1100 --- MAB 7/31/2017 YVO reset the Constant logger clock around 1100
3824 27 Oct 2016 @ 1345 27 Oct 2016 @ 1555 DanS No eruption, with pool overflowing for 2+ hours. High winds.
3603 05 Sep 2016 @ 1000 --- novakg I arrived at 0847 to a full pool. There was very little in way of activity. About 9:45 there was a bit of convection from Vent 3, but no eruption as of 1000.
2855 19 May 2016 @ 0950 --- MAB Since my last visit on May 13, the Green is gone, clearly visible from the museum. Closer inspection showed good refill action from rooster tail and the little vent on shore, no convection from main vent. YVO confirms one eruption, but the time stamp was so far off last fall I'd hold off on entering E times until we synch up the logger with a seen eruption. Let the games begin!!
2438 29 Sep 2015 @ 0953 --- Tara Overflow.
2359 15 Sep 2015 @ 0945 --- MAB Electronic eruption confirmed - no green in the runoff channel. Observations over the day showed action from the rooster tail vent and the little one on the east bank, but little to no convection from the main vent.
1587 14 May 2015 @ 0940 14 May 2015 @ 1400 MAB Convection in Whirligig looked the best I have seen so far this season. Last eruption March 6, pushing 70 days now.
1519 28 Feb 2015 @ 1442 28 Feb 2015 @ 1510 Kent Pool in overflow at 1442. Too much steam to see any surface disturbances. Good stream of water entering pool from up basin.
1487 02 Nov 2014 @ 0000 02 Nov 2014 @ 2359 MAB Both Constant and Whirligig have lots of water coming into them from above. Both were looking a little 'colloidal blue' in the centers of their craters since the heavy rains in late Sept. enlarged that twin runoff channel from near Pinwheel.
1437 06 Oct 2014 @ 1740 06 Oct 2014 @ 1840 Jake 1740 to 1840, in overflow with frequent bubbling of the 2nd vent. another vent behind the main vent emitting streams of bubbles that persist to float around the surface
1181 01 Sep 2014 @ 0000 01 Sep 2014 @ 2359 MAB No eruption for 10 hours today, Sept 01. There is a large thermal soil "delta" in the pool similar to that seen in April-May (when Whirligig had been dormant Feb 06-May 23 2014), with water still draining into the geyser from upstream of Pinwheel.  The recent heavy rains may have played a part in this slowdown, and obviously the creation of the delta.  Convection and action from the vents looked better on my evening visit than they did in the morning.  Norris logbook/staff did not see an eruption yesterday, or a drained crater. YVO is currently offline so I offer this information until we know more.

788 01 May 2013 @ 1159 --- steve At 1159 Whirligig had a rolling boil over the main vent but no splashing, the side vent did give one burst to about a foot and there was heavy overflow. No other action in the next 90 minutes
4730 01 Oct 2000 @ 1800 --- research-mab 10/01/2000 Whirligig remained full all day
4710 06 Jul 1990 @ 1800 --- research-mab 7/6/1990 Constant, Big Whirligig and Fireball all very active today.
4694 22 Jun 1988 @ 1800 --- research-mab 6/22/1988 No eruptions of Big Whirligig noted thus for this summer
4862 18 Aug 1985 @ 1800 --- research-mab 8/18/1985 Summary of Whirligig: From watching it on 8/18 & 8/19, etc. It has a near 2 hrs 30 mins interval (near-about). When it erupts – it erupts for about 3 to 4 minutes. The water in the back vent goes up to 4 or 5 feet at an angle in height and occasionally shoots it out 5 to 10 feet. The main vent in the pool center – shoots bursting water to 10 feet sometimes higher with the eruption making a sound like a helicopter/ locomotive. After it erupts it takes 1 ½ to 2 minutes for the pool to drain 2/3 of the way down where it stops & starts to refill again slowly. Then it takes 40 to 50 minutes about for the pool to fill slowly back up to overflowing. Taking 45 to 50 minutes from the start of the eruption- thru the eruption, draining of the pool, refilling of the pool to where it is (the pool) overflowing again. The rest of the time – near 1 hour & 40 minutes about the pool is filled w/water= till the eruption. The intervals between eruptions are near 2 ½ hours long. Big Whirligig and Splutterpot Geysers are directly connected. Both of the above usually go off at about the same time. Splutterpot Geyser then goes off & on real frequent during the time of Big Whirligig’s Eruption, then stops about 20 seconds after Big Whirligig not to erupt again for the next 10 to 12 minutes. Then Splutterpot continues its 5 to 6 minute interval till the next eruption. More on this later.
4858 18 Aug 1985 @ 1330 18 Aug 1985 @ 1350 research-mab 8/18/1985 No watching Splutterpot and Whirligig between 1100 to 1145 and 1330 to 1350

7623 11 Feb 1984 @ 1800 --- research-mab 02/11/1984 Whirligig Geyser – Dormant, overflowing quietly with small inflow from Constant Geyser. Orange & dark green algae present in basin.
4758 11 Jun 1982 @ 1200 --- research-mab 6/11/1982 Naturalist Orientation tour: Big Whirligig overflows, put, put put B. Whirlie – gen 3-10 min when active, interval 30-40 min to 1 hr Little Whirlie - like constant, sometimes every 30 sec, 20 min to 1 hr for series {BRACKET AROUND BOTH, ABOVE: Most years 1 is active, 1 dormant – apparently both dormant this year}
4617 26 Sep 1980 @ 1800 --- research-mab 9/26/1980 Little Whirligig Suspect Big and Little W are alternating eruptions.
4605 15 Sep 1980 @ 1000 --- research-mab 9/15/1980 Whirligig Geyser – became darker grey as the day progressed. Turbidity, at least in part, was due to run off entering Big Whirligig from Blue Geyser, via Constant. During a Big Whirligig eruption - the water did not clear indicating muddy water was coming from below or, all the water leaving Big Whirligig was that which had flowed into the system from Blue’s run off. I suspect the first case. Temp not ie at 10:14 165ºF, while ie at 1104 - 184ºF
4599 22 Aug 1980 @ 0000 --- research-mab 8/22/1980: Activity not observed out of Big Whirligig today. Little W active.
5081 22 Jun 1980 @ 1800 --- research-mab 06/22/1980 At the end of the (Little Whirligig) eruption Big Wirligig re-filled, but hasn’t been seen in eruption yet this year.
5131 01 Jun 1980 @ 1800 --- research-mab 06/01/1980 Big Whirligig – no evidence of recent eruptions, 144ºF
5070 04 Oct 1979 @ 1800 --- research-mab 10/04/1979 Whirligigs very quiet, dual eruptions seem to cause very long intervals.
5068 29 Sep 1979 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/29/1979 Caught the Whirligigs in dual eruption again this afternoon. Big Whirligig was in eruption at 1642. At 1645:45 Little Whirligig joined with a continual splashing eruption. Big, feeling the affects of its competitor, grew in vigor, sending at least one burst 15 feet high. At 16:47:10, the Splutter Pot joined the confusion. Big Whirligig quieted down at 15:52:50 (7:05 in L.W.’s eruption) with only the rooster rail splashing afterwards. When Big quit, Little had a more typical individual bursting pattern. Little Whirligig ended at 16:55:20 for a duration of 9:35. It drained in 1:50. Big Whirligig quickly drained to 2 feet down in the vent. Africa was very quiet during the show, but grew in vigor as soon as Big Whirligig quit. As of 18:00 neither had erupted again.
4987 23 Sep 1979 @ 1105 --- research-mab 09/23/1979 Caught the Whirligigs in dual eruptions this morning. First time I’ve seen this occur. Big Whirligig started with a five minute lead, the Little Whirligig joined in at 1057. Little Whirligig was weak in the beginning and continuous. Then became more powerful as Big Whirligig grew to the strongest activity I have seen. Big quit and Little quickly followed suit, the whole show ending at 1102.
4988 22 Sep 1979 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/22/1979 Little & Big Whirligig seem to be alternating eruptions nicely.
5058 12 Aug 1979 @ 1800 --- research-mab 08/12/1979 Big Whirligig stopped as Africa became powerful {no log time}
5028 10 Jul 1979 @ 1800 --- research-mab NOTE 07/10/1979 The wirligigs [sic] made a lier [sic] out of me today. Big wirligig [sic] erupted for 10 minutes instead of 3-4min. Little wirligig [sic] erupted for 10 minutes. This was shorter than previous times of 16 min. There was a 38 minute wait between Little wirligig’s [sic] eruption compared to last weeks wait of 6 minutes.

4961 22 Jun 1978 @ 1800 --- research-mab 06/22/1978 It seems that when Little Whirligig is active for long periods Big really drains low, similar of course to what happens with Big W is the dominant geyser. So far this summer Big Whirligig has been the dominant geyser. It sill be interesting to see if the roles will switch like they did last summer.
5109 29 Jun 1977 @ 1025 29 Jun 1977 @ 1040 research-mab 06/29/1977 Between 1025 and 1040 Little Whirli, Big Whirli and Constant all erupted.
5100 30 May 1977 @ 1800 --- research-mab 05/30/1977 The Whirligigs are hard to figure. Sometimes Big Whirligig erupts for a long duration > 10 mins other times for only a couple of minutes. Sometimes there’s a comparatively long interval other times it’s more like like last year. Little Whirligig is similar, I’ve seen it several times a day and other times not at all. Still haven’t found a pattern to their activity.
5210 17 Sep 1976 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/17/1976 Big Whirligig now has longer pauses between eruptions. It erupts for 1-3 minutes, stops for 30 sec – 1 min. Even the “tail” part of the eruption is no longer active between bursts.
5211 15 Sep 1976 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/15/1976 Big Whirly still erupting constantly.
5212 13 Sep 1976 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/13/1976 Big Whirly – apparently still erupting almost constantly
5231 11 Sep 1976 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/11/1976 Big Whirly still going nearly constantly.
5233 10 Sep 1976 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/10/1976 Big Whirly – still goin’ nearly constantly.
5241 07 Sep 1976 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/07/1976 Big Whirly continues to nearly constantly erupt.
5247 03 Sep 1976 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/03/1976 Big Whirly still active 3 min eruption - ½ min quiet – repeat. 162º in pool
5251 01 Sep 1976 @ 1800 --- research-mab 09/01/1976 Big Whirly may have been in nearly constant eruption for 24 hrs!
5318 31 Aug 1976 @ 1830 --- research-mab 08/31/1976 Big & Little Whirly & Constant are behaving as never before! Big Whirly has been erupting nearly constantly for 1½ hrs (since 1136). There are short pauses between eruptions, but the “tail” keeps going during the pauses. Little Whirly has been erupting along with B.W. It sometimes goes 7-10’ hi, but usually just splashes. Constant was erupting to heights of 50 feet (!!) & on three occasions B.W., L.W. & Constant were all erupting at once. Usually, B.W. would be erupting, Constant would shoot up 4 good bursts & L.W. would drain. Constant has been erupting every 15 min.
5292 31 Aug 1976 @ 1136 31 Aug 1976 @ 1815 research-mab 08/31/1976 Big Whirligig had been erupting nearly constantly for 5 hours. (Still erupting 1815)
